I co-own a model train forum and we've got our edit timeout set for one hour. It gives a poster time to rethink what they said and correct any errors, typos or otherwise. Beyond that, we want to keep someone from changing what they said, especially like what Brett said, when a post is quoted, the original should then remain intact.

Our train forum is quite civil as well, but even then, we have an occasional disagreement or flair up, that's what mods are for. Just to add to what Brett said, members of this group should be proud of themselves, nary a word out of place, eager to help and share.

I guess... heck, even 2-hours seems plenty for me. I totally understand wanting to go back and fix a typo or something after you post... or be able to fix it if you come back after 20-minutes and THEN see your mistake... 24-hours seems a bit long. It gets confusing if people are given too-much time to go back and edit posts because either replies lose context as the original post gets updated... orphaning a reply... or "quoted" replies also become orphaned with no connection to the edited original.

Personally, if I made a mistake or want to append and the time runs out, I like it BETTER to see a historical list of the conversation rather than someone going-back 23-hours later and re-writing their post based on numerous replies and changing the original trajectory of the thread. It gets too easy to lose context.

Just MY 2-cents.

Well, let's try it like this and see how it goes. I don't think we'll have too many issues with people getting edit-happy on their posts, but if we do we can ask the Admins to knock the time down to something shorter.

That sounds good, a couple of times I wanted to edit as to posting correct info or just more update instead of posting another post......a great Forum for us all!

Totally understood. It's not a problem until it is.
