And I say this statement makes no sense to me. To each their own I guess.

I will however agree with you that the franchised dealership experience is far from optimal.

Style, features and stow and go were the decision points in my case. The Siena did not look specially in the interior that refined. The Odyssey looked like a good candidate but the stow and go from Pacifica played the ultimate decision role. No regrets here.

In our case, we never owned a minivan prior to this purchase and were probably the most anti van people you could find out there :-) I test drove all the vans out there from Toyota, Honda, Kia etc etc. None really appealed to me and then i met the Pacifica. The interior styling, the panoramic sunroof, modular stowaway seats, entertainment packages and all the other features already mentioned stood head and shoulders above the rest. It wasn't even close in our case. It felt as if we had found a compromise we could live with. Now we dont even drive the other car that much anymore because of the convenience the Pacifica gives on all levels. Now its not the quickest out the gate but nothing is perfect in this world. We would do it all over again in a heartbeat! Love the Pacifica!

I had an hour to kill and decided to test drive an Ody to satisfy my curiosity. The tester was a mid level EX-L with the sticker in $38k neighborhood.
What I liked:
The ride quality was excellent, maybe better than my PacHy, although the short test drive wasn't enough to understand the details
The variable assist steering is nice
I remember reading that the Ody had no rear AC. The second row vents were blowing a cold air.
The trip meters have options to auto reset with each ride or refuel.

I prefer the angular Ody dashboard over the wavy and rounded on Pacifica.

What I didn't like:
The transmission took its sweet time to downshift through the gears for a rapid acceleration. It took almost a second for the van to get moving. Not even close to the instant pedal response of PacHy.
The ACC is 10 years behind- it only works on speeds above 28MPH
No "bird eye" camera view, even on the top trim
Less informative instrument panel
Only the basic adjustments on the passenger seat

I tried to park the van in my garage, it was just as hard to fit through a single door as my PacHy. The manually folding mirror required a lot more effort.
To my surprise, the dealer immediately offered over $5000 discount for that van. Honda is usually quite stingy on the price, the sales are probably slower than they want.

If you read the Odyssey forum you'll find a lot of fit and finish problems, like misaligned panels or bad paint. To me Honda is cutting corners for profits to help pay for the massive airbag recall and lawsuits. It shows with things they've deleted like the rear a/c and crummy entertainment system. Its now rated below the Pacifica in quality.

I didn’t mind the dealership experience (my dealer was very straightforward and no shenanigans). If I ordered straight from the manufacturer I wouldn’t have been able to negotiate the great discount I got. Try negotiating with Tesla on price and see how far you get.
The point made here is that simply the existence of the dealership model adds 15-20% to the price of the car. If you could avoid that it will benefit the consumers. Tesla cars are sold at very close to its factory price (as someone did a cost analysis of the parts a year or two ago). Why are regular electric cars not matching the price / features/ range of Tesla (even though they had given away the patents free for everyone to use)? The only cars that compare to Tesla or even beat it are luxury cars that are ridiculously priced (I agree the higher end Tesla’s are ridiculously priced too- but that’s another debate). Mainstream automakers will struggle to match Tesla (model 3) on price with a comparable model simply because the dealership model will eat up 15-20% of the price and there is no way to get around it unless the law changes.
Tesla didn’t start a dealership in the first place, therefore there’s no one who would lose by Tesla selling online directly to consumers. Very smart move.
