I think the issue is that Mercedes like many other automakers have two separate identities.
One as a luxury car / SUV and another as a truck / commercial vehicle with no pretense of luxury at all.
It looks like Metris van was conceived as a commercial passenger/ cargo vehicle. Somehow the luxury division saw its potential later and started to incorporate it into their lineup. But no ones buying that story. Now they are trying to push the half cooked product into consumers throat and it seriously backfired in America.
