Thumbs down 2018 Pacifica

We have a 2018 Pacifica Limited bought NEW In September and had the tires balanced in December at 6k miles. Took it back in March with all 4 tires cupping 8K, Dealership said rear shocks were not working properly. They would replace the shocks but only 2 of the tires. They said if I had not rotated the tires I would of only needed 2 tires not 4 replaced. If I had not rotated they would of used that as the excuse of the cupping!!! I was forced to pay $545 dollars for the 2 tires mounting and balancing. Courtesy Motors of Danville said that is all the District Manager out of Lisle IL would allow!! I am not convinced this is the problem but I have to go with their diagnosis at this point. NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!! Called customer care and they said DM has final say. I ask the service manager Scott if he would of settled for that if it were his new van and he had to pay for the tires. You can bet this will be my LAST Mopar product if they don't take care of this.

Hi kyle,
We certainly understand your frustration with this situation. Unfortunately, as our team is not technically trained, we rely heavily on the determinations made by the dealer. If you'd like, your welcome to send us a private message with your VIN and we'll gladly look up your case to see if there's any other information we can provide.

I have my doubts about shocks causing this. I know you see a lot of blather out there about bad shocks causing tires to cup, but to date I have never seen an explanation as to how shocks would cause a tire to bounce in the same spot or spots, with resultant cupping, but not bounce in in other spots on the tire. Have they checked your alignment, front & rear, and looked for loose suspension bushings or mounts?

The cupping starts because wheel & tire assemblies are not perfectly round and balanced to begin with. Anything that can cause inconsistent/uncontrolled road force will amplify the imperfections. The two common causes are wheels/tires that are out of balance and bad shocks/struts. Both of these causes make the tire bounce up and down more on the road which in turn causes the tire to rotate in a more oblong manner at highway speeds as a result of the slight imperfections. Vehicles with one of these problems are easy to spot going down the highway. You'll notice that the wheel & tire assembly appears to wobble on the road rather than roll smoothly on it. If left uncorrected, cupping starts. The problem will snowball & worsen the longer it is left uncorrected.

The question I have is what exact wear pattern was appearing on the tires. Was it really cupping or was it another type of wear pattern such as diagonal swipes, heel-toe, or feathering? Unfortunately, many techs incorrectly use the term "cupping" for any of these patterns even though they're very different and properly identifying them can help find the cause of the corresponding wear pattern.

This article does a good job of explaining the difference between the wear patterns.

I had a 2005 Ford Focus that would cup the rear tires. I tried rotating the tires more often, had alignment checked, tried different brands of tires and wheels ( twice). Only after replacing the rear shocks was the problem resolved. Just my two cents.
