By reading the comments it seems there is NO opposition to watching video in motion by the front seat occupants. Personally I'm not a proponent of this feature and I for one am in favor of the "lockout". It is just another distraction added to cell phone use, texting, eating or whatever, not to mention it is against the law in many states, mine included. I'm guilty on occasion of using the cell phone (hands free), but definitely limited use. Driving it seems has become secondary while on the road. JMHO.

That may be a misinterpretation. Many may just want to be able to control the video by a front seat occupant, especially when that occupant is sitting in the passenger seat. Dealing with a troublesome back seat occupant can be very distracting indeed. Making a video adjustment to pacify a back seat occupant may be far less distracting than an unhappy back seat occupant.

For me its ridiculous there is no Im a passenger button for a number of things. Id even be fine if it only let you do it when it actually detected there was a passenger in the car (which I️ think it does for air bags anyway). For example, not letting the passenger enter an address in the Navi is hugely annoying. Or as mentioned above controlling the rear system for our kids.

I would agree with the above.

Has nothing to do with android auto, with the exception if you got the model that takes an aux video input you might be able to use that to display a video out from your phone (which could be running android auto app). But you wouldnt have any of the other integration.

Video in motion is always locked out. That is a law.

But the ability to use the controls, like input an address always seems to work in EU brands. That is my experience in both BMW and Mercedes anyway.

My last 3 BMW's were not locked out. Including my 2016 X3. None were coded.

You're probably talking about in-motion video. Navigation, phone and all menus are unlocked without the coding.

Any idea why it needs wires to the passenger seat BCM?

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
