Battery issue/question for new hybrid

So I went this evening to check out a 2019 limited hybrid. The one that I specifically wanted was there at the lot but when the sales rep went to drive it around told me the battery was dead. I didn’t think much of it at the time however I was still curious to test drive a Pacifica hybrid. the sales rep showed me another one on the lot, went to start it up and had the same issue of the battery being dead. The rep played it up to new staff that had likely cleaned them and left something on. Third try with a different vehicle worked. We test drove the car and really liked everything about it. I felt a little uneasy about the battery situation so I didn’t purchase anything so I could come home and do some research which led me here. I see that there has been some issues with dead batteries. Is this something that I should just walk away from? The sales rep was saying the vehicle likely just needed a jump to recharge the battery but I’m not so sure now after reading a few posts. Should I demand the battery be replaced if I decided to purchase it? For those that have had an issue or helped with the issue does changing the battery solve the issue or do you think this will be a reoccurring thing? Thanks for your help!

Take a look at the date of manufacture which you will find on the sticker on the edge of the driver's door. There have been quite a few reports of dead batteries on hybrids which have been sitting on the lot without being driven and without being charged. This is especially true in cold weather. The 12 volt battery will get charged from the motive battery if the van is driven. It will also get charged if they plug it into a level 1 or level 2 charger. If neither one of those happens then every 21 days it will wake up and try to recharge the 12 volt battery from the motive battery, but it won't do this if the motive battery is at 0% because somebody test drove it and then the dealer didn't recharge it afterwards.

If the date of manufacture is more than a month or two old and the motive battery is at 0% then it sounds like a good idea to ask for a battery replacement up front. Make it part of the price negotiations.

Great info AZBean! I was unaware of some of these details of how it charges and wake/cycles. Agreed that 2019s should not pose an issue with batteries unless they have been left to sit on the lot without having been charged up. Some of the dealers have very little customers with an interest in a hybrid plug-in and so I can see why there attention to these details would be a little soft. However, if the dealer really understands hybrid plug-in buyers, they would be quite sharp if they kept their few plug-ins charged up for potential customers. AZBean didn't say there would be any problem with the 16KW Lithium batteries having been uncharged for a while wouldn't think there would be. But good advice to ask for a new regular 12v battery if the dealer was so lax as to let it sit dead for weeks. That's only a $100-200 cost for them to replace it if they want a sale, and it was on them for not keeping them charged up once every couple weeks. I've had no issues with batteries on the 2018 I had last year that was purchased 11 months after manufacture, nor the 2019 I purchased this year 2 months after manufacture.

I hope this sets your mind at ease, it really is a great vehicle!

Me personally, I'd quietly mark the old battery and then politely make it a condition that a new battery be installed. Hopefully they'll agree and replace if. If they lie and just charge the old battery then move on to another dealer. Travel if you have to. Where you service it has little to do with where you buy it.
