Apple Car Play

I'm not sure what I'm not doing correctly but when I connect an iPhone, I don't get the Apple Car Play icon. The phone is connected and from what I understand from the owner's manual, I should just plug the phone into a USB port and the icon displays automatically.
Any help would be appreciated.

You might want to refer to these threads for some help:

I've also heard the quality of the cable may impact the phone being recognized.

If you figure it out, please reply what made it work, good luck.

you'll have to choose the right USB port, only one works that way (to top one)...

After you plug your phone in it has to be unlocked to enable airplay - try pulling the fuses for the uconnect system to reset it, I did that and it worked for me. you can read about it on the links above

This..... The car play app will magically appear once you UNLOCK YOUR PHONE. I also spent some anxious times until I figured this out (assuming your issue is the same).

I was able to get it to work by using the top USB port, something the owner's manual doesn't mention. It just says to use one of the USB media ports.
Thank you for responding as I do appreciate it.

So this creates an interesting dilemma:

The UConnect system has a navigation system that is pretty good but one BIG drawback is that you can’t enter a destination address while the car is moving even if it’s done by the passenger. So, a savvy person just uses their iPhone connected to the upper USB jack initiating Car Play which allows you to use the Apple navigation system instead. This system doesn’t constrain you from entering addresses while moving. So now you’re cruising along and you want to listen to some tunes that you have on a USB stick. Too bad. It’s either the Car Play with the iPhone or the USB stick with your favorite tunes. For either one it is required to be plugged into the upper USB port and nowhere else. So you cannot navigate with the iPhone and play music from a USB stick at the same time. I believe you can, however, listen to music on the iPhone while simultaneously navigating with Apple Maps.

Not so. The low USB is for media. You can have music/movies on the lower and use the upper independently.

I have a 300gb external HDD plugged into the lower permanently as a media center with crap loads of stuff that can be accessed from front or rear screens and play different media to each.

But the way trends are moving - streaming music is much more convenient and cheaper than managing millions of songs. Which can be done simply from the iphone and carplay.

Use the Theater app and run whatever music you like from the USB in the lower port. And click back to carplay for the Apple maps if you need to see it, otherwise enjoy the dictation.

You could also share tasks from 2 iphones in the vehicle at the same time, one can serve music and maps from carplay and the other can also share music (saved or streamed) over bluetooth through the Media App which also has the perk of showing some cover art. Switches seamless between devices.

Theater plays movies and music but has the disadvantage of a clumsy interface.

When you say “lower” I assume you’re talking about the one at floor level in the console just to the right of the power port (cigarette lighter), right? Neither of two USB sticks that I have will function in that port.
