Engine kicks on for no apparent reason?

Hi,

I just got my new 2018 Pachy Limited on 3/30/19. I have noticed the engine kick on at times I would not expect it to on multiple occasions. For example, today I was driving to work, stopped at a stoplight with about 50% battery remaining, outside temp was in the 60s and climate was off and the engine kicks on while waiting at the red light.

Is this normal? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes I have similar experience with my 2018 pacHy. The engine would usually shut off within a min. I don't have an explanation either, but I would chalk it to regularly scheduled gas engine maintenance run to keep gas/oil fresh.

We had just driven about 20 highway miles and had plenty of battery left when the engine decided to run for about a minute. Like you, I couldn't think of any reason it would do that.

You would think it would give a message if it was putting the system into refresh mode. I just noticed this behavior yesterday. It was in the 70s here and my wife was driving the car with around 30% charge remaining on the HV battery. We were in a parking lot looking for a parking space next to the free EVSE. The ICE kicked on for no apparent reason and stayed on until the van was parked and shut down (maybe a minute or less). After about an hour of charging we returned to the van and drove it home completely on electric without the ICE restarting.

In D mode.

Glad to hear it is not just me! Still can't say I like it.....I have heard about refresh mode but I thought I read that a message should display on the dash telling you that is what it is doing too. I have used about 1/8 of the tank the car came with from the dealer but it was only filled up 3 weeks ago.

Hi curlystew and lettcco,
We understand why this may be concerning. We suggest having your dealer inspect this concern if you have not done so already. We are also available via private message if you would like any additional assistance during that process.

I understand the refresh mode but don't understand how it is implemented. I once saw a message that it was in refresh but it only displayed for a short time. Is the refresh programed run based on the time since the last refresh, or is it the time since the engine last ran? Also, how long should it be between refreshes?

According to what has been discussed on this forum and what is in the manual, refresh mode can activate for at least three different reasons: 1) Stale fuel (engine hasn’t run and consumed fuel in awhile). 2) Water condensation in the oil. Every now & then the engine needs to get to a certain temperature (oil) and stay there for awhile to evaporate the condensation. 3) Spark plug fouling. Supposedly if it is perceived that the engine has run rich for enough time it may decided to run in refresh mode long enough to burn off the residue on the plugs.

How it calculates any of these things is somewhat of a mystery.
