Recall notice (V15 2018 RU BALL JOINT)?

Hi,

Has anyone else received this notice? https://www.chrysler.com/universal/w...ce/pdf/V15.pdf

Just wondering if the work is relatively quick or not. It seems pretty serious as the steering is affected. I have a bunch of other fixes my car needs, and now may be the time for me to take it in.

Thanks,
Tony.

Read the part under service action again. It says "[t]he remedy for this condition is not currently available." You can't take it in and get it fixed because they haven't figured out how to fix it yet.

I went car shopping last weekend and went to a dealer with about 6 hybrids. When we arrived, they informed us that the hybrids are all subject to this recall, they cannot sell them, and they do not know when they will be allowed to sell them.

It applies to Pacificas manufactured between November 2017 and March 2018, both hybrid and gas versions. They have figured out how to fix it, it requires a new pinch bolt, but they have not yet shipped out the parts to the dealers The work should take about an hour and a half unless the inspection finds that there is already damage to other steering components.

If that dealer had 6 hybrids they couldn't sell then they must have been 2018s and pretty old ones at that.

You must have received a different version of the recall than I did. Per the one I received it can be fixed now and will take about 30 minutes to replace the bolt and inspect the right front knuckle and control arm. Or about 2 hours if they need to replace the control arm. I called my dealer and they are making appointments for it.

Yeah, and in retrospect, I'm kind of glad he couldn't sell it to me, because I might have bought it. We went to five dealers that day (Chrysler/Honda/Toyota then revisited the Pacifica/Odyssey at a second dealer) and the salesman at that place was by far the best. He introduced himself and asked our names (3 dealerships we had to introduce ourselves) he did a thorough job of explaining the car features better than any of the other salespeople, and tried to sell us a car without being overly pushy, and when we left he offered to help us find a car we want since he didn't have exactly what we wanted and sent me a text message with his number to get in touch if we want his help.

That said, the Hybrids on the lot were so ill-kept that some of them had cobwebs on the interior, and he had to jump one to take it for a test drive. So, while I would highly recommend Juan at Tracy Chrysler I can't recommend the dealer for whom he works.

Yeah, I just scheduled the recall with my local dealer. They confirmed they have the parts and it won’t take long to fix.

They may have been right, or more likely, they were flat out wrong. Would be pretty rare odds-wise to have all 6 fall within that specific time window for the recall (which may need to expand but right now it's pretty narrow).

It's mind boggling how much disinformation the salesfolk spew, they're either simply ignorant or it's totally intentional, don't know which. Whatever they say, always do your own checking and research, never take their word for it.

Usually they lie to make a sell. I can't imagine a salesperson lied to me to avoid selling me a car when he has multiple of the same on the lot. It is possible they are dumb and just assumed the recall applies to all 2018 PacHy's and didn't check the actual VINs.

I did do my own research - after the fact. I looked up the recall, found out there was in fact a stop-sale recall in place, discovered that type of recall is not the worst there is (there can also be a a stop-drive recall). I also learned there is a $21,000 penalty if they violate the stop-sale order, but that there is also a loophole they can use by selling the vehicle used. It's a good sign the salesperson didn't offer to sell it to me used (because that would void the federal tax credit).

On the other hand, I just checked the VIN again and the car now says there are "0 unrepaired recalls," yet the salesperson has called or texted me to let me know the car is available. It's also odd that he had know idea when the repair would be available but less than a week later it has been repaired. I suppose I could see if a local dealer will trade for the car, but I'm not certain I want a hybrid that has been sitting on the lot for year.
