Pacifica Hybrid burnt to the ground

Hello,

Just feel obligated to share the story, hoping to save someone from what we went through or worse.

What you see on the picture happened 2 weeks ago (was busy trying to talk to Chrysler and Insurance so I haven't posted right away) at night. Car was charged and sitting on my driveway. We woke up from things blowing up. When I looked out of the window the flames were the height of the 2-story house.

4 kids, myself and my wife escaped through the backyard door, took firefighters 1 hour to put the fire down.

I was trying to install the charger inside of the garage but luckily couldn't fit the car easily. I used Chargepoint charger and it has nothing to do with the charger, obviously an issue with the car. I had this car for just over a year, no accidents, maintained at a Chrysler dealership.

Spoke to Chrysler, they said that they are sorry to hear about it but are not interested in anything else. No investigation , nothing. That amazes me as much as the car made for families blowing up on its own.

Not sure if I can add much more to this story but I am happy to answer any questions.

Regards,
Dima

How terrible, glad you and the family are ok. It's disappointing and scary that Chrysler is making no effort

Whew. Glad everyone is ok. How can you be sure it had nothing to do with the charger?

So glad everyone is okay and lucky that you didnít park it inside garage. Note to all pachy owners.
Even though uncommon, issues like this will be overblown in the media and reinforce the negative perception of FCA quality in general and Pachy in particular. Is @ChryslerCares aware of this?

Sorry to hear about this! Very scary way to wake up!

I was wondering how long the van was parked before the fire was detected?

There is a known issue with the original u73 recall that caused these to catch fire. It was fixed but took them 2months! Then they used the SAME recall designation “u73” which denied all who had the bad software installed from having it fixed because the “recall was already done”. So after some time and push back from owners, a new recall u94 was issued.. needless to say they managed this problem horribly!

Many went undetected and burned. Unfortunately a “Factory maintained vehicle” was the cause of the problem here.

The thing is that a sync issue occurred in the Gas engine that filled the Catalytic Converter with raw fuel causing the thing to glow and catch the surroundings on fire! What I’m wondering is if it is possible it may have just started to smoulder by the time you parked?

This particular issue is well known to Chrysler and they wouldn't be the slightest surprised.

The forum and Facebook worked very diligently to inform everyone, and how to identify if they where affected to have it fixed - even if chrysler said it didn't need it - which was very common!

Sorry for your troubles! Glad the fire didn't spread and everyone is safe.

Last fall there was a specific recall for stalling and fire risk on the Pacifica Hybrid. Was this performed by the dealer?

It was a software update to a specific module, and a check (and possible replacement) of the catalytic converter for fuel caused damage. Apparently the faulty system allowed the continuous cranking of the ICE to continue for a long period in an attempt to re-start it after the initial attempt failed. Raw fuel was then pumped into the exhaust system, causing some fires.

Thanks. I am in Canada but I contacted Chrysler US and Canada on multiple occassions. Planning to contact media and NHTSA and everyone I can. I am just busy with 3 insurance claims: 1 burnt Pacifica, 2 burnt garage because the flames were so vast that it touched the garage and fire was not sure if they can put it down, 3. my other car because fire broke into my garage and damaged the other car.
