Pacifica MPG Figures Announced

Fuel economy figures for the gasoline-powered versions of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan have been announced, and the news is good.

The 3.6-litre V6 engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic that allows the van to achieve 28 mpg on the highway, 18 mpg in the city, and 22 mpg combined. These figures see the Pacifica matching the fuel economy of the Honda odyssey on the highway, but when it comes to the city the Pacifica is 1 mpg beneath the Odyssey.

The hybrid Pacifica should be the most fuel efficient vehicle in its segment, and we will know for sure once the EPA rates it. Chrysler has promised 30 miles of all-electric driving and up to 80 MPGe.

Highest MPG in its class. Great to hear. The hybrid should offer outstanding MPG then.

Wonder if Honda will feel the pressure to make a hybrid Odyssey now.

If you'd like to read more about the hybrid Pacifica, I found this article that talks about the engine in more detail.

The battery pack itself—likely from LG Chem, but not officially confirmed—uses pouch cells and is liquid-cooled. “We have to cool them when we’re charging, and we found that’s very hard to do with the exterior variance,” said Duhaime.

It charges in about two hours on 240V with the 6.6-kW onboard unit, or in 12 to 14 hours on 110V, and Chrysler decided that fast-charging wasn’t going to be utilized much by buyers, who are expected to merely charge overnight at home.

Surprised they just went with liquid cooling since i'm sure configuring the system to also allow for air cooling is a great way to make use of the air already passing by and through the vehicle. Unless its something they don't have mentioned yet.

Liquid cooling is a superior setup. Liquid transfers heat extremely efficiently when compared to air which is actually a decent insulator. Think about being in cold weather vs being dunked in cold water. Also it's a more controlled System in hot environments. All the early hover boards depended on air cooling and we know how that turned out X^D
