Lug Nuts for Standard 17" Steel Wheels

I have a 2019 Touring L w/18" rims.
I am buying a spare 17" steel wheel w/a 235/65 R17 tire (it will save space and weight i the Van, used only as a spare in emergency).
I've been told my stock lugs for my 18"rims will not fit the 17" steel wheels, and I need to buy
Chrysler Dodge #6504672 Factory OEM Polished Stainless Lug Nuts 12x1.5.
Is this true?

Unfortunately I don't know the answer.

I know when you buy wheels from TireRack they send lug nuts that you are supposed to used instead of the OEM's ones, so there could be a reason why they want you to purchase the OEM nuts for the 17" wheels. However, I would be surprised that someone else other than the dealer doesn't sell a directly compatible "OEM style" nut.

Let us know what you find out.

The parts catalog shows that there is a difference in the lug nuts shown for the steel wheel, but I'm guessing that it probably has more to do with retaining the plastic wheel cover used on the steel wheels than anything regarding its ability to hold the wheel on the vehicle. It sounds like your dealership is desperate for parts sales.

This particular lug nut (06504672) appears to have been on tons of Mopar vehicles (including both the Grand Caravan and Town & Country) over the past 20 years with wheel covers. If you really find there is a technical reason that you feel you need these, there should be no problem finding them for nearly free in most any auto salvage yard.

Both wheel nuts (Mopar p/n 6504672 and 6509769AA) have a 60 conical seat that mates to the wheel. That's all that matters so the 6509769AA wheel nuts will work fine for temporary use with steel wheels.

I say "temporary" only because steel wheels have a tendency to etch a groove into the conical seat of the wheel nut (especially if they are over-tightened) over time because the tapered edge on the steel wheel is much smaller than it is on an alloy wheel. Because of this, you shouldn't use a set of lug nuts previously used as the main set for mounting steel wheels to mount alloy wheels.

Again, using your current lug nuts temporarily for the spare tire will be fine.

Here are my pictures, of the factory (Short Lug Nuts) for the 18" rim and the ones (long) meant for the Steel Wheels.
The Longer ones #6504672 Factory seem to sit better in the Steel wheel (as it should).
The link below to order at ebay for less than half the retail price.
So my Spare Tire saga is complete, 17" steel wheel, 235-65xR17 tire (both bought at Wal mart online) and these lug nuts.
