HARD Shift from 3rd to 4th

I have an early release Limited built and purchased Aug '16 with 13700 miles on it. Love this van and have not had any issues with it except one. I cant believe people are having the problems they are posting here. All I can recommend is to read the owners manual. There are so many little things this vehicle will do that can be overlooked if you don't at least browse the manual.

Anyway, The transmission is the only problem. The problem happens when I moderately accelerate to 40 mph. it will usually shift to 4th before 40 ok but if it shifts after 40 it will then literally bang into 4th gear. It is like metal on metal. I know this cant be good for the transmission. Also if I'm cruising at 35 and need to climb a hill it will upshift to 3rd and then bang hard when returning to 4th.

I have counted the shifts and I'm sure its 3rd to 4th. I think this vehicle sometimes starts in 2nd. I think this is normal. If I'm on an incline it seems to start off in a lower gear.

The dealer updated the firmware for shift enhancements. When it was in for the EGR recall. I noticed improvement in drive ability but it did not fix the hard shift.

The dealer say it is normal for this to happen. I'm not buying it. I want the transmission replaced or they need to get into it to see whats wrong.

It would be nice if some FCA technicians or engineers could explain how these transmissions work and what is normal behavior.

Hi Daveinpvks,

Sorry to hear about your concerns with your vehicle. If you decide to make another appointment at your local dealership for further diagnosis feel free to send us a PM with your VIN for further assistance if needed.

We have the exact same issue! I appreciate your description of it as we have been in the shop 3 times now with this issue and because it cannot be "duplicated" we are given no options. Ours also will occassionally hard shift around 12mph and 60 mph, but the most common and hardest shift is at 35-40. It clunks so hard sometimes you'd think we were just rear-ended. We had the EGR recall fixed - but like you it did not fix the issue. Ours is a limited, purchased in Sept 2016. We have an appointment with the transmission tech at another dealership in a few weeks - I will update if they figure anything out.

I am having the same problem. Shifts so hard feels like someone is rear ending me. I have an appointment to get it checked out for the second time. First time dealer was unable to duplicate the problem. Seems like a recall would have been issues already with all the complaints I have seen online about this same issue.

I have the same situation but I can't reproduce it at will so I have not taken ever my car to the dealer for this reason.

I cannot even feel a shift in mine - only about 1,200 miles on it now. Is there an indication somewhere of what gear you're in?

I ran into a similar issue with my '17. The hard-shifting felt like I was being rear-ended and happened about a half-dozen times between oil changes, so mentioned it to the dealer when we took it in on this last oil change. The tech mentioned that he heard some odd noises and drained some fluid to check the condition. Noted that there was a large amount of metal flakes in the fluid and opened a STAR case. FCA told them to replace the transmission and cooler. Took about a week but now my van is back to shifting butter smooth again.

Do you have the STAR Case number in your paper work? My van's 15 mph jolt is back.

Yeah, good luck! This is very much the scenario we have, but I couldn't tell you the gear. Even escalating this to the Chrysler district management may not help. If you've got a great dealer, that might make the difference.
