I contacted my dealer Monday morning, they scheduled 6/13 for me. I don't believe they can catch the software bug. Just send to them in case.

The vehicle came back to functional as normal after the fault, the Stop/Start function was back to normal too. When the fault occurred, the starter was functional. I could saw the engine reached 7000rpm when the starter keeping working. So I believe the problem came from fuel system or other systems (the second battery?), but not the engine or starter.

When the Stop/Start try to start the engine, it should start the starter, and also fuel system, ignition system. I don't think the problem was from spark plugs or wires. It is highly possible that the fuel system was failed to start, but the Stop/Start lacks of fuel system detection. So the engine could not start. The only method is turn off the vehicle to reset the computer. I will prepare a wrench in the vehicle to disconnect the battery when another strange issue occurs.

Hello Pacdw,

As mentioned to the other forum members, we'd be more than glad to help if you're thinking you'd like to work with the dealer. We're available via direct message and would need your VIN to get started.

I cancel stop and start in the summer because it shuts off the condenser in the A/C. And if you're sitting at a long light, the van gets a little stuffy. So, I'd rather not have so much strain on the stop/start system in the summer. IN the winter it is fine.

Had the exact issue myself yesterday afternoon. Van stalled as pulled off the freeway at stop light. Would not restart for 3 attempts. Finally turned off ignition completely and opened door. Waited about 30 seconds while angry motorist raced by me on either side (had hazards on). Each attempt to restart I could hear a loud thumping noise behind the driver side near the sliding door. Sounded like someone was literally banging on the side of the car. Anyways on 4th attempt after opening drivers side door, I got the van to start. Had a message on the drivers dash that said, "Stop/Start Unavailable Service Stop/Start System". Van has 21,989 miles on it and dealer told me recall update HAD been done. Stopped at nearest gas station and after refueling anticipated error code would clear with a fresh restart, however as of this am I still have the error on my dash and plan to see the dealer tomorrow at 7am. I will not let my wife drive this vehicle which our children in it until this is resolved!

This is good! I've read lots of stories of people having this issue and the dealer not being able to recreate the problem to diagnose.

If your ESS is showing a fault, they have something to fix. This may help others who don't have a persistent fault code. Please let us know what they say tomorrow.

Exact same thing happen to me, but split time wise. My ESS had been iffy for a while, often restarting the engine just seconds after stopping it, most often listing battery voltage as the reason.

One day stopped at a light the engine stopped normally then cut out telling me I had to shift into Park. Took 3 tries to get it restarted including leaving it off for 30 seconds after opening the door. Once it got going things seemed ok again but I manually switched ESS off every time I got into the car.

Fast forward a few weeks, on a long road trip and we stop for dinner. I go to get the van to pickup the family after dinner. The van refuses to start with loud popping sound each time. Took 4 tries, again with 30 second wait and door open it starts up and now shows the “Stop/Start Unavailable Service Stop/Start System". It’s been in that state ever since. I suspect the popping sound came from active noise canceling going crazy.

Just adding it to my list of issues for the dealer to try to fix (which is now 10 long) when I get a chance to take it in. It’s too bad I love the can so much otherwise I would put up with this crap.
