Intermittent AC Problem

I have a 2017 Touring-L Plus, and I’ve been having an intermittent problem with my air-conditioning that’s really been driving me crazy. It stopped blowing cold air back in October, but since we were going into winter I put off any repairs. All of a sudden it started working again about a month ago, but now over the past week it has been very intermittent. I’ll go for a 10 minute drive and it won’t work, and the next time out it does work. I talked to the dealer and of course they can’t do anything about it unless it’s not working when they have it, but I’m afraid to drop it off and pay for a rental and not have them be able to do anything with it.

Unfortunately I’m out of warranty (60,100 miles) otherwise I’d just have them replace the compressor and see if that was the problem. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

No, I don’t. It doesn’t cycle on or off while the car is running. It either works when I start it, or it doesn’t work.

It could be the compressor, it could be just the clutch. It could be a relay or fuse. Having someone actually look at it would give you a real answer for a lot less than throwing parts at it.

The problem is the dealer won’t look at it unless it’s not working when I bring it in, and because it’s R1234 no local shops have the equipment to look at it. With my luck I’ll take it in not working and as soon as they start it up it’ll start working again. I’m not throwing parts at it because I’ll be paying out of pocket. I’ve been through all the fuses so I know that’s not it. There are 2 or 3 other things it could be but won’t know for sure until it stops working completely.

You could test the relays by ohming out the coil and contacts. I havenít looked but itís pretty common for the same relay to be used for several different things in the fuse box. You could swap the relays see if the a/c works all the time. There is something else you could try but you gotta know what youíre doing. I pull the relay for the a/c and use a jumper wire to turn the compressor on - itís not something the average joe smoe should be doing because youíre bypassing the high and low pressure cutout switches. I only do it with a set of gauges on for troubleshooting and/or recharging. A/c isnít all that complicated - on the Pacifica there may be a little more with the electronic sensors in the interior but the mechanical portion is pretty basic. I donít have the r1234 hook ups yet either but Iíve been looking for some hoses or adapters to us with the gauges I have now for r134a.

Iíd love to share some beer in the driveway and help you out if you were local but then again Iím still trying to recover, I can hardly do basic house chores or dad duty for a 1 year old at the moment - but I might be able to supervise

If you have anymore questions just ask - good luck

Now Iím getting upset. I dropped it off last Wednesday morning at the dealer with it not working. They didnít even look at it until late Saturday, and of course it had started working again. Well, it stopped working with them again today, but their diagnostic computer is down. Iím out more than $250 and counting on a rental, and am no better off than the day I dropped it of.

I had the same issue with mine last summer. There is a post about bulletin for it for the 2017s, but I don't know how that affects the out of warranty situation.

It is here: https://www.pacificaforums.com/forum...tml#post215402

I'll try to find my post later, but it was out all weekend, then as I came to the dealer driveway it turned on. They tested it a few times, and were going to give it back to me when it finally conked out for them. Very exasperating, as are all intermittent problems -- and as an engineer who has had my share of intermittent problems to investigate on railcars, I have some understanding of the dealer's viewpoint. If they replaced the compressor and it continued to fail because of a sensor or something, then you will really be ticked.

But at least they see it down. Hopefully the diagnostic unit will be up and the system will still be out. The TSB may give them a heads up.

Thank you very much. This does appear to be the exact issue I'm having. I'll pass this on to my service advisor and see what he says.
