malfunction indicator light on dash

So now the malfunction indicator light came on after starting the car and does not go away. The manual says to run the car through a few cycles and it is probably due to a malfunction such as gas cap or fuel quality. Does not really help much. The car does not have a gas cap anyway. The message board is empty and does not mention anything wrong. Has anyone run into this problem and how was it fixed and what was it due to? I would want to avoid going to the dealer another time. Thanks.

Stop off to aurozone and they will plug in the OBD II scan tool and read the stored codes. Then you can punch that into google and you will likely find a bunch of info out there.
The MIL light by itself doesn't tell you anything other than you have a problem. You'll likely end up at the dealer anyway to fix the issue as your van should be within its warranty period, so you might as well just get it in to get repaired. Or check the code and find out if you want to drive it with whatever issue is there. But most MIL items don't self correct and there is no gas cap on these to tighten to make and evap code disappear, like on other vehicles, so, yeah, just get it in for service. There is something wrong.

HI ecknobhill,

If you decide to visit your local dealership I'd be happy to assist in making an appointment or follow up with them for you. Just PM our page and let me know!

Could be anything but at least get an OBD code check ASAP to make sure it is not an engine misfire code. Some causes of misfire can destroy (or significantly shorten the life of) catalytic converters which are notorious for being both expensive and not covered under many warranties including the Chrysler extended warranty.

it was diagnosed as a cylinder 2 misfire. It may take a week or more to order the parts and fix it. Hopefully this is the end of my endless trips to the dealer or I leave the car there for good

A single cylinder misfire should be a quick fix with a coil pack replacement. I'm surprised they don't have parts on hand. This is the same engine they've been using in fca products for a few years. But good luck, and glad you got it in quickly, because that misfire condition is bad news for emissions, as posted previously, and the cylinders themselves.

It looks like the coils may have changed with the Pentastar refresh that debuted on the 2016 Grand Cherokee/Durango and is now in our Pacificas (p/n 68223569AC). If it were the same as the coils from the prior years (p/n 05149168AI / 05149168AH), then I would definitely agree..

So it has been over 10 days and the car is still in the shop. I stopped by to get some information as they don't do really communicate to find out the car is parked in a garage with its engine gutted open waiting for spare parts. The mechanic said the parts are not readily available and it could still be a while. I have a loaner but it is not a Pacifica and I feel powerless in what to do. Another 2 weeks and the car will qualify as a lemon. That's not what I have signed up for. Again the symptoms were an irregular idle engine and a malfunctioning light indicator. I hope no one else has this problem. I am still hoping the parts come soon.

Did they tell you exactly what part they ordered?

A misfire on just one single cylinder on a brand new engine that has no compression issues almost has to be:
1- bad coil or spark plug
2- bad fuel injector
3- bad/loose wiring.
4- bad ECM

All those parts are easily accessible and takes only minutes to swap out with any other Pacifica on the lot (and perhaps other Chrysler vehicles for some parts). Just saying...

Not so quick, remember my story. We had a "check engine" light come on just minutes after leaving the dealership, and the shop determined quickly that it was a bad EGR valve. None on hand and so when they went to order one, they were told to contact Chrysler engineering first. They had them swap one out with another Pacifica and it worked and so I should have been on my way that day, but Chrysler told them to put it back where they got it and they'd send a new one. A few days later they sent a repair kit instead. Nope, that didn't work so another wait until the sent the part. Total time was almost two weeks.

The point is, they may not have permission to swap parts around regardless that doing so is in their best interest to keep a customer happy. Fortunately, I did have a new Pacifica as a loaner but it was still short-sighted not to just leave the swapped part in and replace the part in the other vehicle when it finally did come in.
