They actually lack side impact protection around the legs and hips. I have a metal frame in my Graco car seat. The only benefit of having a metal frame per the experts, is that it reduces the flexibility of the car seat whipping forward. The thesis is that, when tethered, the car seat's frame has the same amount of restraint if it was made of plastic or metal.

I forget which group, but someone started side impact crash testing car seats and some failed miserably.

Father of thing 1, thing 2, thing 3, thing 4 is getting a minivan.

I fit a Diono Ranier (or RXT) in the second row rear facing WITHOUT an angle adjuster pad. And seat in front of it is still comfortable. That is impossible is either my C-Max or Passat. So I'd say the 2nd row has a lot of space.

We’ve got the Chicco Key fit, 3 across in the middle row. Still possible to get into 3rd row very easily.
