Unhappy Vehicle won't start - LV battery won't charge

Unfortunately, I have now joined the list of owners who have experienced a non-working $50K automobile. I love the van when it works but it has failed at a very inconvenient time and place (although not on the highway!).

1. Purchased off a dealer lot in FL on 10/30 (2018 Hybrid Limited).
2. Drove without problems for 3000 miles around FL for 2 months.
3. 12/28: drove to TN. Fully charged overnight using included level 1 charger.
4. 12/29 and 12/30: Drove locally without problems. Fully charged every night using included level 1 charger.
5. 12/31: vehicle will not start. Info display reports low LV battery voltage (below 11V). Tried to jump start the vehicle and/or charge the battery but the info display never goes above 13V. Vehicle still refuses to start.

It is ridiculously cold in TN this week (the high was below freezing) so I'm wondering if the problem is related to that.

At any rate, my family and I are stranded 600+ miles from home. Chrysler support is closed for New Year's Eve (and I assume most dealers are closed until Tuesday).
We had planned to visit a cabin starting tomorrow in the Smoky Mountains but now we have no way to get there (or back to FL after that).

I'm mostly posting this as a warning. I'm not sure how I'll ever feel confident taking this vehicle on a road trip again.

Have you disconnected the battery and then see what the voltage is? If it is low, place a charger on it a couple hours then try starting it again.

Not sure how to fully disconnect and charge the battery directly. Removing the plastic access panel only seems to provide access to one of the battery terminals.

Whole panel comes off. Did it once to disconnect the power to reset everything.

That sucks! I have no advice but I’d like to hear how this plays out. Just got PacHy this week. This has me thinking about roadside assistance for EVs...I have AAA but no idea if they’d be any help besides a tow...and then where do you tow it?

I own the ICE version Pacifica, but if the LV battery won't take a charge it sounds like it is defective. Cold weather will bring the worst out of a defective battery.

Hi TampaPacHy,

Sorry to hear about your concerns with your vehicle! Please send us a PM with your VIN so I can look into this further for you as well as escalate your case for further handling.

Vehicle won't start - diagnosis

I have learned a couple of things so far:

1. Try not to have a vehicle failure (especially away from home) during a national holiday. There is no one to take your call at Chrysler Cares and there are no dealer service departments open to diagnose your disabled vehicle.
2. The hold message on the Roadside Assistance phone system encourages you to visit rsahelp.com to input your own info. If you do this, then I still recommend calling to ensure that your info made it into their system. I wasted several hours assuming a tow was on the way only to call and find out that it was not.

The service department where my vehicle was towed says the following parts need to be replaced:
Power inverter module
Onboard charging module

Their initial estimate for receiving those parts is 1-2 weeks.
Still waiting to hear if Chrysler Cares can expedite those parts and how my family and I will get home this weekend.
Stay tuned for more updates!

That’s a long time to wait for parts. Sounds like they have to make them fresh...

Does the warranty not cover a rental or loaner? At any rate this has me thinking I should add rental car coverage to my insurance.

Update: things are looking up

Chrysler Cares has had the part delivery expedited. One part has already arrived and another is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. A remaining issue is that a corporate tech has to come "certify" the repair and I don't believe they will be on-site to be able to do that tomorrow.

Chrysler has also (finally) done the right thing today by offering to pay for a rental vehicle so my family and I can get home in time to return to work/school as well as promised to transport my vehicle from TN to FL once the repairs are complete.
