We bought our Pacifica at the end of May 2017. Since then we’ve fought the hard transmission shifting, defrost only working on the passenger side of the front windshield and an annoying knocking in the left front. After having our van in the shop seven times since late summer this year we have only the knocking and defrost fixed. While fixing the defrost on only one side they created another issue. Now, we get extremely high temperatures from our front defrost when in just the dash defrost mode. When the dealership gave us back our van the service manager told us that the 140 degree air they measured coming from our defroster is normal. Meat is consumable at that temperature! He gave me a line that there is a temperature sensor under the dash that controls the defrost temp. We have friends with the same van and theirs does not produce the same heat. Reality is that we can’t use the defrost now due to uncomfortable heat. Has anyone else had an issue like this? We still have the transmission hard shift starting to show again and today I noticed the paint on the hood starting to bubble. Love the van, but very frustrated with this unit. Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

Hopefully, ChryslerCares will jump in here and help you. If not, contact them. The hood paint is a known issue, and Chrysler has been fixing it. Your hood is aluminum, and there was some paint prep error during production. Keep us informed as to how this turns out.

Yeah I’d be afraid of windshield cracking on a remote start

Every car I’ve ever owned over a 40 year span applied maximum heat to the windshield when set to defrost. An air temp of 140 sounds quite reasonable after the engine is fully warmed, given that outside air is passed over a heater core containing 190ish degree coolant.

What temp are you expecting the air to be? Given your high level of certainty there is a problem, I expect you have comparative data from other vehicles?

I agree with the idea of the highest allowable cabin temperature to be used in the windshield defrost only mode. However, mine tops out just North of 80 degrees. I don’t have the option of going up to 140 in my Pacifica, do you? I’d be willing to bet that none of the cars you’ve owned in the last 40 years purposely put out high enough temperatures to cook a steak or cause second degree burns.

I know that if the A/C is not dehumidifying the air and moderating the temperature, after a few minutes at high fan speed I usually find myself turning the defroster down/off once the windshield clears due to the uncomfortably warm air on my face -- so either your dealer is right or I have the same problem...... but thinking back over other vehicles, this is not that unusual. But you should have some control over the temperature of the defroster with the settings -- see the excerpt below. But from the highlighted wording, I think it comes on with maximum heat automatically.

From page 117 of the 2017 Owners Manual: (my highlight)

Front Defrost Button
Press and release to change the current airflow setting to Defrost mode. The indicator illuminates when this feature is ON. Air comes from the windshield and side window demist outlets. When the defrost button is selected, the blower level may increase. Use Defrost mode with maximum temperature settings for best windshield and side window defrosting and defogging. Performing this function will cause the ATC to switch into manual mode. If the front defrost mode is turned off the climate system will return the previous setting.
