2018 much longer charging time now

453 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  ChryslerCares
My 2018 hybrid limited recently started taking over 20 hours to charge at home. Before, charging time from an empty battery was always between 14 and 15 hours. Has anyone else experienced this? Thoughts on why this has happened?

Do you know how many kWh your battery is taking now versus before?
My guess is that the outlet that you are plugging into has a poor contact and that it is overheating, causing the charger to pause charging. The charger has a sensor in the wall plug to detect this sort of problem. You could try replacing the outlet with a commercial grade one. Anyway it is an inexpensive DIY thing you could try.

How would I determine this? It is the same outlet I have always used.

Requires a charger which provides this data, such as a Juicebox.

Try a different outlet next time you charge

I guess this is possible, but it's the same outlet I have used for 5 years with no issues.

Things can change over time. Trying a different outlet would be the fastest and easiest test.

Try the outlet as noted , but also the charger would be the next go to point .
I had the same thing happen, but my charger throws a code (red flashing LED) when it senses an overheat, so I knew the cause. I had it plugged into a poorly-installed outlet that faces upward. It was warm to the touch, but not hot. That seemed to be enough to trigger it to low rate of charge, though.

My garage door opener was plugged into one socket, while the other was empty (for years). I think dust and rust built up in the open socket (since it wasn't covered and anything could fall into it over the years). When I swapped to the outlet that had the garage door opener plugged into it the problem was solved. Unfortunately, the way the plug is oriented, I couldn't use the degraded outlet for the garage door, so I ended up running an extension cord to it from another outlet. It looks janky, but it works. The garage door opener is only 0.5 kW and runs for such a short time I'm not worried about fire.

Strongly recommend against extension cords to your charger, since it pulls a lot of power (>1 kW) for a long time, which makes any wires (of unknown condition) that are not inside a conduit dangerous.

Hold your hand to the plug and feel if it is hot.
If the outlet is bad and the connection is bad, the portable charger will error out and stop delivering electricity.

My suspicion is that your portable charger has an issue. To begin with, it should have never taken 15 hours to charge. The normal charing time is 10h 40min. The portable charger (which is not a charger at all) tells the onboard charger, located inside the car, how much electricity it can pull, in Amps. I would first try a different portable charger. Borrow one from a friend.
If the charging time is still high, take the car to a public L2 charger and see what happens. Charging there should take about 2.5 hours.
If the charging time is still hight, there is something wrong with the onboard charger.
Make sure the EVSE is not in full sun. It will overheat and throttle the current draw.
