Hey all. I am trying to wire my dashcam to the fuse box for direct power. I am also trying to add cigarette lighter power. The only fuse box I found was outside in the hood. I have a few questions

  1. Is there an interior fuse box I can tap into? Where is it?
  2. If not, How do I draw the wiring through the interior to the exterior under the hood?
  3. The exterior fuse box has empty slots. Can I use those?

thanks

1. No
2. I ran mine through the unused grommet intended for the trailer hitch wiring harness (in the image below)
3. Not without great difficulty. The unused slots do not have contacts soldered to the circuit board underneath. If you were extremely motivated, you could take a fuse box out of a junkyard Pac and salvage connections from it. You would then need to remove your fusebox and disassemble it and solder your salvaged connectors to it - IF you could find a live spot, which you may need to do some reprogramming to accomplish. I am not saying it is impossible, but only the truly motivated would be willing to expend the effort. It would take hours of work.

Would it not be easier to pin the two 12-volt lighter plugs? If your dashcam has parking mode which requires two hots, one constant and one when in run, one plug is always hot the other works with the vehicle in run. Both have grounds and are fused of course.

WAY easier! In my case, I installed an inside fuse box so that I could install gadgets in the future, should I so desire. Turns out it only has one device connected to it so far
