2021 Lower control arm. Tools needed

255 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  nomade_usa
Hi guys.
I just bought both sides of the lower control arm to replace of my 2021.
Someone here already did this job and can tell me which wrench should I buy to replace? For all the bolts. Thank you

I did in my 2014 dodge grand caravan a couple years ago, but didn't remember exactly the tools

Other than dropping the ball joint out of the steering knuckle the rest should be close to the same. Being I have not had access to a lift for years to use a large pry bar to separate them, I jack my vehicles up, and lower them on two jack stands sometimes three for more piece of mind. Remove the ball joint bolt. Then put a 2X4 under the steering knuckle if there is room, if not under the rotor, and use the floor jack on the opposite side of the 2X4 to gently compress the strut up and tap the control arm down with a mallet to separate them. Only needs to go up an inch or two. Once they are separated let the floor jack down and continue the job.

Depending on the vehicle I normally do not have to disconnect the tie rod to give extra clearance to remove the control arms. There was one however in the past I did have to disconnect the tie rod to give more room to move the strut out of the way.

If you have to disconnect the tie rod use a tied rod separator that you crank with a ratchet. Don't use the wedge separator with a hammer. The wedge will damage your boot and cause your tie rod to fail quickly when water and dirt get in. For tie rods that don't have room for a separator, I thread the tie rod nut out and flush to the tie rod bolt. Then flip a deep socket of the same diameter as the bolt and nut backward and use a mallet to tap it out. once loose remove the tie rod nut.
