I think this is mostly a FireTV question. Has anyone figured out a way to use the in-app download option to save content to play offline? Given how buggy UConnect USB and DVD/Bluray are I'm looking for alternatives as I plan a long trip through an area where I know service is not sufficient to stream. I'm not looking for guidance on how to rip/download content to USB/Bluray. I want to try to use the built in FireTV before resorting to using another device where I know the official apps support download (e.g., a tablet or phone with HDMI out support)
  • Prime Video seems to work in that I can download a movie to the FireTV (appx 10GB per FireTV device shared for apps and downloaded content) but most of my content is not in the Amazon ecosystem.
    • By using low quality download setting (seems fine for the rear screens) + screen mirroring I have room for 4-6 movies total with different titles downloaded to each FireTV device)
  • Netflix and Disney+ do not seem to work in that the FireTV app does not have the download option. My suspicion is that this is what happens when you take a product like FireTV intended for stationary/at-home use and put it into a van.
Your thoughts, tips, and tricks are more than welcome.

I have been having similar challenges. I think even if movies are downloaded, it's still live data connection (a logged in Amazon profile) for it to work. The blu-ray is very buggy does not work all the time. Do you have exact steps to make Blu-ray work?

You are right - even if you download things to the Fire TV it requires a live internet connection to get authorization to play it back. It's a hassle. Best I can tell it's less than 24 hours offline until you need to reconnect and when there is a connection the full library of downloaded content isn't refreshed only one item is updated. Makes for the frustrating experience where you start something from your driveway (on wifi) finish it on the road, then can't play the next item without an active internet connection (e.g., hotspot)

The experience with other services is that you can play youtube and disney content offline for 30 days, 7 days for netflix. I wish @ChryslerCares could push amazon to extend the duration, but I suspect there's a product expectation that you will buy the ATT van internet package - which I didn't do. instead I use my phone as a temporary hotspot to get the authorization refresh then turn it off while the kids watch their content.
