This is my first forum posting.

We purchased our 2017 Pacifica at the end of June. 109 miles on it. By 2K there was a mildew smell that would blast out of the a/c when we would turn it on. Husband called and was told that it happens "give it six months." The car went in for service two times since then; and both times he's asked about the smell. Changed the cabin air filter one time -- no fix. Then used a canister of some kind of stuff the service department gave him that was supposed to fix it -- nope. He was told that to run this problem down would take 2 days and that if the canister didn't work that the service department would do it. SO, we are now at the end of December; and the problem still happens sporadically (it's never been 100% consistent). Just picked her up today and they still will not work on tracking down the problem. Has anyone else had issues with a mold smell coming from the a/c of their new Pacifica? It's embarrassing. HOW did you get the dealership to finally address the issue. We are VERY certain that the dealership is trying to kick the problem down the line to avoid warranty work.

And we too are having the sporadic issues with the passenger sliding door losing its automatic functioning. Can't figure out a consistent cause or cure.

Still love the stow and go and the space that we have. Kids range from 4-8" to 6'-1". So space and head room were large concerns in our car search. Just never thought mildew would be an issue.

Turning on your air conditioner to maximum often may cause bacteria growth due to the excess water that is dripping in your unit.

To fix this problem, locate the drain tube in your A/C unit. Make sure that is working properly. Use an anti-bacterial treatment that will destroy bacteria that is growing behind your dash panel. Inject the treatment solution into the air conditioner case. It is advisable to turn off the car air conditioner for awhile and let the fan run instead for a few minutes. This will help evaporate the water on the coils of your unit.

Yes we have. We are at about 44k and have an occasional awful moldy smell. I haven't figured out the pattern yet - it seems to appear regardless of the weather or what vent selector we use. It's there for awhile, then gone. Sometimes it starts ok, then starts stinking. I haven't been to the dealer on it yet. Just not sure what to do.

Hello everyone,

Just to chime in, there is a Star Case for the 2017 models and relates to the odor smell you're referring to. If you'd like to work with the dealership, feel free to send us a direct message and reference this message. We'd be glad to get this process started.

We took our 2017 Pacifica in 2-3 weeks ago for a very strong mold/vinegar smell. They said they made sure all drains and lines were cleaned and cleaned out the vent system. This seemed to last 2-3 days and then the smell returned but less smelly. We then changed the air filter as it was not changed at the dealership to see if this would fix the issue and it did not. Yesterday we again took it back and the first response we got was “we could not replicate the problem” so this am we went and sat in the van with the service manager and the smell was clearly there. The service manager replied “oh this is going to happen after the car sits due to the humidity, you have a big air box” and that “this is normal”. My husband drives an Xl Youkan which also has a large air box and we have yet to have an issue with it having a mold or mildew smell. I have also had older vehicles that have never had this issue so I’m confused as to how “this is normal”
Very frustrated with this entire experience. It’s getting warmer and I won’t be able to drive with the windows down much longer.
I’m totally bummed to say the least and was planning on a future Pacifica after my lease is up because I love the van so much but I cannot do this if the issue is not resolved. I feel like my health and my 3 young kids health is being compromised do to this issue.
I am hoping there is some other way to resolve this issue because the dealership is not willing to do anything at this point.

It is true that in high humidity environments that mold can build on evaporator coils and cause an odor, especially if the van sits for a couple of days between drives. I make it a practice of turning off the A/C the last few blocks on the way home to blow some warm air through there to dry it out a little in the summer. Nonetheless, it is also possible that you have a different problem, especially if one of the smells you detected was "vinegar." I wonder if maybe a small animal/rodent found their way into your system and got stuck and has since expired? If the smell is only there when you first turn it on and then dissipates, then that seems a lot like a common mold growth scenario. If it persists, it is possible that you have a bigger issue.

Car AC evaporator oder is a pain to deal with. Compare it your house evaporator but its smaller and MUCH more inaccessible. It's also exposed to bigger changes in humidity and temperature than most home AC. Doing what @seo68 recommends about shutting off the AC and having only the fan blow over the wet coils to dry them out would help, but it if the mold has already had a chance to build up, its hard to get rid of. I'm curious about the star case that was mentioned by Chrysler Cares in this thread.

Hello Bonzzy,

As Longtimemopar mentioned, there is a star case for the odor concern. Would you mind sending us a direct message with your VIN to get started?

musty smell

I have a early build 2017 and mine started smelling must last year.I was reading that on the new cars and vans if you go to the car wash you should always put it on recirculation as it keeps the car wash water from entering the system dont know if it works but have noticed no smell all winter. As a side note I see that for 69.00 my dealer will clean the system so they must be having trouble with them smelling. They went to a system on airconditioning that tends to use the water to cool the coils and it doesnt drain out like it did on the old systems.Mine does not puddle under the car near as much as the old sybtems did.As stated run the heater once in a while to dry the system out.

I also have experienced this same foul vinegar / mildew odor smell coming out of the AC. I bought a new 2017 Pacifica, and the foul smell has been like this ever since the new car smell went away. I took it into the dealer yesterday with my concern. I asked them if maybe the drain was clogged, as reported by other forum posts here. The service rep told me that the van doesn't have a drain to unclog. They sprayed some type of deodorizer, and they told me to wait a few days to see how it works out. I'm not hopeful.

I noticed that the foul smell comes out of the AC when the auto engine stop / start kicks in while I am waiting at a red light. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or if that is part of the problem.

Anyone have a fix for this yet?

I sent a direct message to @ChryslerCares... will see what they say.

I'm driving a rental while mine is being repaired and this one smells really bad. And the odor comes from the AC! I never felt nothing like that in any other car that I have ever drove.

We are having this same issue. It's awful and no one can find anything wrong. We are avoiding driving it at times. How can I get this resolved?

Hi, my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica has the same problem. (6700 miles on it) purchased Sept 2016. I took it into the dealership and they said they new what to do. I left it with them for a day, but they ended up giving me the same song and dance that others have reported...we couldn't replicate the issue. Even though they new what was going on, they did not do the mold cleaning that they new was going to fix my problem. They said leave it with us for a few days and we will try to find out what the problem is. I had been down this road with them before considering a rattling noise in my steering wheel. It took way too many visits to resolve a very simple problem. Their test driver was an old guy with poor hearing. They ended up replacing my steering wheel which now has a rattle in another area of it but not as bad as my other one. Very disappointed in their service department. My VIN is 2C4RC1GG1HR536416. Can you help me with this smell problem? It has been present for over a year.
