I would like to car top my big, heavy kayak on family vacations. I'd love to hear from others who do this - do you use the factory rack, an aftermarket, and does your setup require any lifting gadget? I have a suction-cup roller already. I don't have any roof rack presently, but I'm hoping the factory rack (available through parts department) and my suction cup roller are all I need. As this van will haul the kayak only once or twice a year I'm not looking to put a big ugly setup on the roof permanently. (My other car will haul it 95% of the time)

Thank you :)

I haul an Ocean Tandem Kayak on the factory roof rack cross bars all the time. I bought some pads at West Marine that protect the crossbars and kayak. It works fine with no issues. I'm able to lift mine onto the roof without aid, but it's a handful. I usually help support the kayak using the top of my head as I slide it onto the roof rack. Much easier with two people.
