I'm throwing this out there for any Canadians that may have used or tried their free 1GB trial of the AT&T wifi hotspot.

A few things i ran into were:

1) On a down side: Apparently it was giving my wifi hotspot an american based IP from what i can gather. I figured AT&T was using some form of Canadian carrier lines in Canada (Rogers, Telus, Bell, Etc) however quick test showed that when i opened Netflix for example on my phone or tablets it was providing me american content. When trying to play such content I would get the "You are using an unblocker, proxy or vpn and is not supported" error message. Putting two and two together the only thing i could figure out was that my geo-location on my phone was in Canada but i was using an american IP/DNS and this was causing the Netflix error. Im sure you can possibly get around this with a VPN back into canada or something. But figured I would note this. Not that you want to stream video services in your car on limited data plans but this could potentially cause other issues having an american based IP in a Canadian location.

2) On an up side: What i thought was fantastic is I just did a road trip through Washington state from BC and the hotspot was seamless crossing the border. And worked flawlessly down in Seattle with no additional costs. I never signed up for a monthly plan or provided any credit details but the wifi hotspot continued to work throughout our weekend adventure in the US. To have the ability of a working hotspot in the car while travelling in the US was very beneficial without having to buy an additional roaming package for our phones... If this is how the regular monthly plans are for the AT&T hotspots this is a huge bonus knowing it will continue to work in both the US and Canada for those of us that cross frequently.

3) I also tested using the hotspot to setup an Apple TV in the van for our apple devices to support airplay. This worked both with or without an active data connection as long as the hotspot was enabled in the car. I was able to use airplay and stream content between my phone and the ATV on the rear screens. However note that Netflix removed the ability to support airplay so that still did not work but movies using plex or videos taken on the phone etc worked no problem. I never tried all the video apps however. I would assume this would work for other devices like chromecast units or amazon devices. But i did not test.

Has anyone else tested the Wifi Hotspot capabilities in Canada and did you have different results or similar?

This was tested on my 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited S

Cheers.

Data pricing is absurd , I have a american address and credit card and it’s 25 a month unlimited, the canadian cost is like 75 for 14 gbs. Unlimited data and hotspot is way to go but not in Canada .

With US adress and American credit card are you able to get an american subsriction on your canadian VIN and use the data in canada?

ATT hotspot plans for cars are all over the map... right now they are at $20/month unlimited, they had a promo for $15/month unlimited not too long ago!! This is what they have right now for US customers Chrysler Uconnect with In-Car Wi-Fi from AT&T.

re: Canada, the page reads « International: Wi-Fi hotspot functionality not available outside of U.S. & Canada. Service in Canada depends upon availability of unaffiliated carrier coverage. General Wireless Service Terms: Subject to Wireless Customer Agreement (see att.com/wca). »

I took advantage and signed up for this promo last year when they ran it. I didn’t really “need it”, but for that price I felt it was too good to pass up, especially since it locked in the pricing at $15/mo going forward.

I called for the plan for Canada and it’s like 75 bucks for like 20gb . When you compare the price it’s absurd . Canadians can get the American price you just have to know how to circumvent the ordering process, it’s fairly easy in grand scheme of things for the price .

I use Fido’s “databytes” when we want wifi and use the phone as a hotspot for then Van. Databytes is Fido’s bonus 1 hour with unlimited data per day perk. It allows you to use 5 a month on demand for each plan.

My wife and I both have Fido so it’s essentially free 2 hours of unlimited data at 4g speeds.

But we dont roadtrip with the kids yet, and they dont use devices for normal commuting type drives.. only traffic jams and drive that may take a couple hours.. then the movies or ipads are available.

I get a major discount on AT&T service and often use it in BC with no issue. Telus is the primary roaming carrier although Bell and Rogers are also allowed. I have not taken the Pacifica to Mexico but it should work the same.

No one told me we had a free trial - and of course there is no AT&T here.

I also don't get OTA updates -presumably because I have no internet connectivity.

Any other Canadians have comments regarding this?

I'll excuse the OP for presuming we have AT&T here.

I used the free trial in BC Canada.. the OTA update capability is not related to an active subscription.

My plan was with AT&T still even in canada, however it works fine on our local networks. Guess they sublet this?

Chrysler Cares pinpointed what package is needed for OTA updates years ago.. IIRC it works on the “uConnect Access“ option.. and I believe the option adds the Assist button to the rear view mirror.

IIRC the rule was if your rear view mirror had the assist button then the vehicle has uConnect Access and is equipped for OTA updates.

edit: had a few minutes to search chrysler cares posts about “uConnect Access”

I didn't get anything to tell me I had a trial. Wonder if I still have one on offer? No OTA for Canada I see, which is what my dealer said.

Not true.. I’ve been getting them.

So far, the only thing being a Canadian excludes you from is getting ChrylerCares to help you on this forum..

So, does your rear view mirror have SOS and Assist buttons?

Secondly, did you complete the activation for uConnect Access? I think there was a button on the uConnect for this that starts all the trials.. SiriusXM radio, the Internet service (which was 1yr or something dumb like 1gb, whichever came first), enables the App and the Vehicle Health Reports.

Did you get any of these services working?

Unfortunately, not for the 2017 :( No wifi or OTA updates.
I think the app control and features might be different too vs the US models, or maybe that's also because I have a 2017. My app is blank.
No lifetime warranty either. The best I could do was extending to a 5 yr 160K basic.

Mind if I pry a bit here?

@1tg1 hasnt followed up and answered the questions above yet,.. how is your vehicle equipped and what has been your experiece with the following services..

“So, does your rear view mirror have SOS and Assist buttons?

There was a statement once that canada wasnt getting uconnect access connectivity, however that only caused some delays. 3 months later I was able to activate my services and use everything.. if you didnt stay up on it, you may have got stuck within this time period.

If you havent activated your uConnect Access account, you will not get OTA or Wifi Hotspot (3g or 4g) or the any of the services..

No buttons on the mirror, only the mics. No uConnect access activation. Did do the XM radio trial right from the start and actually did a second trial this past summer.

So no WiFi in this car and no OTA updates or health reports.

Oh, That adds up then.

If you dont have either of the buttons for SOS or Assist then you surely wont have the uConnect Access features including OTA or Wifi Hotspot. One of them is a key part of the package but I cant remember if its the SOS or the Assist button.

But its safe to say that if you have both then OTA updates are possible, and if you have neither then your not equipped.

But I wouldnt say thats a 2017 pachy issue or related to being Canadian..

2017 Hybrids (with uConnect 8.4A and RA3) are available with the uConnect Access package. They use a 3g Wifi hotspot and have been receiving the OTA updates from discussions on the forum.

Not sure how many are Canadians, the country marker is a newer addition to the forum. But once Chrysler and AT&T worked out the carrier issues and the service came into Canada I doubt it would be any different between the 3g and 4g vehicles.

Not sure. I will look. I don't use my rear view much.

Never saw that either. I did have Sirius xm at the beginning but never subscribed.
