Auto-headlight sensitivity

Does anyone know if we or the dealer can adjust the auto headlight sensitivity? I scoured the options in my Uconnect system and the owners manual but didn't see anything. They seem to be overly sensitive on my vehicle. I can be in stop and go traffic on a completely cloudless sunny day and stop under the shadow of a tree and the headlights will come on. Then it takes them a min or 2 to turn off! Kind of annoying because then the dash lights dim when the headlights come on and i cant see the gauges or Uconnect screen because its so bright out!

Well whatever or whomever inspired them, I'm glad I'm the recipient of it. Its glaring how much better the Pac drives compared to my previous Ody. The body structure is so solid and tight, just like a Mercedes/European luxury car. The suspension is well damped as well. And the gas pedal has just the right amount of hesitation, maybe from the 9 speed auto, that MB is famous for. Yes the steering is dead, a consequence of electric assist, but it has a nice weight to it.
So in the past two weeks, I drove around with the headlights set to "Auto" and noticed some things... they are not as sensitive as the OP wrote. Keep in mind, mine was build in Feb. so perhaps Chrysler made the sensor less sensitive? Anyhow, I have encountered many overcast days, driving into a dark area and the lights remained off. Lights stay off until about dusk time. Since our sun is up around 7am, or right when I am waking up, I have yet to test them in the morning at dawn.

And when my lights come on they DO turn the instrument lights dim. I have to manually adjust them to bright during the day, and dim them at night.
Screen too dim when headlights on

Anyone else have this issue? If it's twilight, or overcast out, the headlights will come on (auto headlights) and the screen and gauges become nearly unreadable. This is with the intensity knob up all the way but not in the detent that keeps it at full brightness. I end up switching it to the detent, which kind of defeats the purpose of auto headlights.

Even when it's fully dark outside I find the highest setting dimmer than I like. There's a HUGE difference between the full brightness of the detent, and the next lowest setting... it's at least 1/3 the full brightness. Why did they do this, and is there any way around it? Full bright is too bright at night, but the next lowest setting finds me wishing it was brighter.

Hi tfisher. Lots of people have this issue. The short answer is no. Most people complain that the auto headlights are too sensitive and they come on too often when it's still light outside making harder to see the display. Don't know if anyone has complained of the light intensity when it's dark out. I've merged your thread with that thread so you can read all the comments.
Hi bina12834. I've merged your new thread with your existing thread on the topic. Probably better to bump this one to continue the conversation than start a whole new one.

Thanks. Skimming through this thread, it seems the problem is less about the headlights coming on (that doesn't really bother me) but that people can't read their screen and gauges. And for me, that extends to nighttime when the main screen is significantly dimmer than I"d like it to be (although I don't want it at full brightness either).

This seems like an odd oversight on the factory's part... did they not drive the car with the headlights on? Do they have awesome night vision (I don't but I"m not terribly old either lol)
I have the exact same issue and as I see it the automatic headlamp control has very little room for delay programmed into it. The sensor needs about a one minute delay built into it before it activates. Its truly a PITA the way it is.
Why is the brightness setting for headlights on grayed out on the screen? Why have it there if you can't adjust it?

I had to turn the auto headlights off. My car is just weeks old and this is a big issue to me. I don't want to have to turn the lights on and off manually. And I don't want my nav screen and entertainment system screens darkening that much during the day. I swear they come on with heavy shade just from trees and it's crazy.
Why is the brightness setting for headlights on grayed out on the screen? Why have it there if you can't adjust it?
Your headlights have to be on to adjust that settings.

Where do you see this setting?
Can someone confirm if the 2018 PacHy does not have auto-shutoff headlights? And that is is actually possible to completely drain the 12V battery if they are accidentally left on? I'm not talking about the daytime running lights but the halogens (or HID for those that have them). I always run my current RX450h with headlights on and they shut off as soon as I shut the vehicle off and close the door. Having to turn them on and off every time I start and shut off my PacHy is not going to be fun.

Maybe I scanned through the thread too quickly but I saw nobody mentioned the screen brightness adjustment in the uconnect settings.

There are screen brightness settings for both when headlights are on and when they are off.

The default screen brightness for headlights off is 10 and that for headlights on is 3.

I changed that from 3 to 6 and found it usable when the automatic headlights turn on during the day and still not too bright for night driving.
I was just visiting with my Brother-In-Law who owns a 2017 Pacifica Limited just like ours. I happened to mention this same issue and he said he had never noticed it and had never used the wheel type switch for any reason. I find I have to reset the thing almost every day as I go from daylight to evening or night. The full up position keeps all interior lights on, and the position just below that is where the setting needs to be to get the screen bright enough during the day. When nightfall occurs the headlights come on and the screen stays too bright for my taste. I drop down one position to achieve the screen brightness I like at night. The next day I find myself adjusting the setting up one notch again to attain the display brightness I prefer.
Bringing back an old thread. Our recently purchased 2017 Pacifica has this issue as well. I back out of the garage into bright daylight and the backup camera is completely useless about until we are in the street putting the car in drive. At that point the headlights switch off and the dash lights go back up to full brightness.
Just wondering if there was ever a fix for this?

Hi JTS97Z28,

Sorry to hear about this! If you would like to send us a PM with your VIN I'd be happy to look into this further for you.

Yes, the TSB was:

NUMBER: 08-049-17
GROUP: 08 - Electrical
DATE: June 17, 2017

SUBJECT:
Central Vision Processing Module (CVPM) Enhancements for Surround View Camera System

NOTE: The service bulletin portion of this bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before June 06, 2017 (MDH 0606XX) equipped with 360 Surround View Camera System (Sales Code XAK).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Customers may experience that in variable light conditions (i.e. backing into a garage on a sunny day), image harmonization between the four views can lead to part of the image being blacked out

I took my van in for another reason, but mentioned the problem with the surround camera and gave them the TSB number. It took about an hour to apply, but it made a huge difference.

Good to know. Just out of curiosity, did you notice any difference in the minor issue I’m speaking of in regards to the delay time it takes to brighten the interior lights to day setting?
It’s really simple to test. Back out of a dark garage during the day, how long is your backup camera (and other interior gauges) useless until the headlights switch off? Mine seems to be the entire time your backing up out of the driveway lol. I have had other new FCA products and several other brands and none had this issue.

Since you probably have the surround camera on the Limited, that TSB might be a place to start. Yesterday I checked with Chrysler Cares and was told that there wasn't a TSB for my van (that doesn't have the surround camera) for the darkening touchscreen. It was suggested that I email a photo or video of the problem and it would be passed on to UConnect. Not sure when I'll get around to that.

I tried changing the "display" brightness (under settings) that was mentioned earlier in a thread, but I prefer the setting (parade mode) that gives the most light on the touchscreen when backing up. There was visibility, just not as bright as I'd like, so I suspect that the response by Chrysler/UConnect would be "operating as designed".

Edit: "Parade mode" (roller switch one click down from interior lights on) is best for me until they update software since otherwise anytime the headlights are on during the day (rain/wipers/lights on law, etc.) the touchscreen dims which I find more annoying than having it bright at night. Parade mode also helps visibility when backing out of the garage. Hope you find a good solution and can get Chrysler to update software if the TSB for your van doesn't help.

Yeah so if this TSB doesn’t fix the issue which based on what I’m reading it probably won’t, but I’ll still give it a shot and see what happens. Either way it’s not a huge deal just a minor annoyance. Since the vehicle is driven mostly during the day the fix is simple, just leave the dimmer rotary switch in one detend below full up. When the vehicle is driven at night just rotate that switch one notch down. Not the end of the world, but definitely not something I have had to do on any other vehicle....including other newer FCA vehicles, so something obviously isn’t working or programmed correctly from the factory.
It’s too bad I didn’t pay enough attention, but we had a new 2018 for an extended test drive and I now really wish I tried this in that one to see if it’s been addressed.
With the TSB, my backup camera is fine when I enter/exit my garage on a sunny day.

However, I find it really frustrating that the UConnect settings (under display) will let you change the brightness for the screen when headlights are off, but not when headlights are on. I have a tendency to leave mine in "Parade mode" since most of my driving is daytime, and I don't want the screen dimming if the lights come on due to clouds/rain. I'll dial it down one notch if I drive after dark and the screen brightness becomes a distraction.

Ok so regarding this TSB, you say it did address the issue I'm describing or is it something you either never noticed or your van didn't have this issue to begin with? So you're telling me that your interior gauge lights and screen switch over the daytime mode almost instantaneously when you pull out of the garage?
Just a little bit ago I tested this exact scenario in my 2016 Cadillac. The screen instantly brightens the second I get outside of the garage. So the backup camera and everything else is 100% usable at all times. So the screen brightness is obviously controlled separately from the headlights which EVERY modern car should be. If they are infact not which it seems to be the case on my early built Pacifica that's kinda bogus and I'm really hoping this is somehow fixed....I'm not convinced yet that this TSB addresses this, but one can hope.
Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
James
