Hello,
Will be going in this week for a 2nd aux battery replacement! Back to "Stop Start System Unavailable" message on the display panel; same exact symptoms as last time and thinking end will be the same (with aux battery replacement). This is after only 9000 miles (granted in the heat of Phoenix). I seem to recall other posts where someone replaced a few aux batteries and then found an electrical system fault as the culprit. SO many people that I talk with that have these vans have had to replace these small 2nd batteries used for the Stop and Start feature (maybe related to the warmer climate). But to replace two batteries in just the first 9000 miles seems strictly ridiculous. Has anyone else been through this with replacing these aux batteries? What are some of the other solutions out there? I'm not sure if it's the batteries at fault, or, like what I've read before (but not sure where), some other part of the electrical systems in the van are taking their toll on the battery. I'm guessing it's the later.
I'm not real happy to say this.... I would not own my van without an extended warranty. There is NO chance I would own a 17 or 18 Chrysler Pacifica that is not under a warranty of some sort. I don't like having to say that out here, but I think most of the others that post a lot out here would share that same sentiment. It seems like there have been a number of issues with these vans and from my own experience there is too much wondering about what could go wrong based on what I read and what I hear from others. This experience that I have had with the aux battery does not improve this aspect of the opinion I express here. A good will gesture by Chrysler would be to extend the warranty on all 17 and 18 Pacificas to match the Hyundai and Kia warranty program. At least until there is a consensus of confidence in these vans. Seems like everyone loves the look, feel, and the features. But the reliability needs work here.

Yes, there are other things that can go wrong in the charging system other than the battery. As far as not owning a Pacifica without a warranty: I don't think I would own ANY new vehicle regardless of brand without a warranty. The cars of today are way to complicated/expensive to repair.

I have been concerned about the batteries in my gas Pacifica since I leased it. I put it on a trickle charger a couple of time a week. The ESS battery appears to be a motorcycle battery. If so, and if it is being used to start the engine repeatedly, IMO it is probably being used beyond its capability under the conditions of extreme heat that many of us expose these vehicles to. I wonder if a high quality battery of the same size might be a solution to the problem...an Odyssey battery for example. IMO the dealers will simply replace a defective battery with an identical battery thereby teeing up the owner for a similar failure later on. I think that the batteries in a modern, post 2000, vehicle should last three years and then be replaced on a schedule. I would like to hear from owners who have replaced the batteries with non OEM replacements.

The small battery is used run the AC fan (not compressor) and other miscellaneous functions when the engine is stopped by ESS, not to start the engine. From @TomB985:
"The small battery powers the majority of the electrical needs of the van when the engine shuts off, which reserves the larger cranking battery for engine starting. This is from the factory shop manual:

How does the ESS system function - simple overview:

- ESS shuts the engine off when the vehicle stops

- The vehicle has to be stopped for a pre-set time before the engine is switched off

- Then, it restarts when the driver releases the brake to move the vehicle

- The system senses brake pedal position and vehicle speed to determine that the vehicle is moving

- Powertrain calibration makes the decision when to shut off the engine and when to restart the engine again

- The ESS function is transparent to the driver

- When the engine stops, a smaller secondary battery keeps accessory features powered, like the fan, wipers, headlights, audio system, etc.

- A Dual Battery Control and Power Relay Control are used to smooth out voltage dips when the starter cranks the engine"

One of the things that can compromise the system is a faulty Intelligent Battery Sensor.

I’m so glad I’m not alone or going crazy. Over the last 6 months our 2017 Chrysler Pacifica battery would die if we went away for the weekend and left it sitting. We kept thinking we must of left a light on or something. We just returned from a 10 day RV trip in which I knew nothing was left on because I doubled checked before we left our car in the RV storage lot. Upon returning from our trip the car wouldn’t start. Chrysler roadside sent 3 different techs and none could get it started. We had to tow it after 6 hours of being stuck in the RV lot with 3 kids. The service center said it happens all the time with these batteries and they have to go around the lot and jump them all the time. They said it’s because the computer is running and updating all the time inside and drains battery. I can’t even believe that is possible! Meanwhile my new car is still in the shop nearly 3 weeks now and they said the battery is back ordered. How can a battery be back ordered on a new car?! Maybe because they are defective? I filed a claim with Chrysler and keep getting the run around. The dealer couldn’t give me a courtesy car and Chrysler won’t even pay for my rental car which is completely ridiculous considering it’s a lease. So what am I paying for?! A car whose battery dies after 4 days? I’m seeking legal advice.

Just disable the ridiculous stop/start nonsense with an aftermarket disabling device.
That will not stop battery drain, nor will it stop the requirement for both batteries to be operational. I do agree with you that the system is ridiculous nonsense.

There are a lot of things that drain the battery when the van is off -- listening for signals from the fob, the theft system and telemetry with Chrysler at a minimum. Today's vehicles are never "off," BUT there is no way you should come back to a dead van in 10 days.

One thing that I have become wary of after my battery went dead is lots of short trips with maximum battery load (lights, A/C, etc.) I am not sure that was the issue, but I watch it. While the alternator will keep the van going, it may not have enough left over to "top off" the battery. But a fully charged battery should handle a few weeks of idle time.

These batteries do NOT handle deep discharges well. If your battery has been totally dead more than a few times, it needs to be replaced (like the dealer is doing.)

Check with some nearby dealers to see if they have problems ordering the battery -- a shortage has cropped up from time to time on these threads, but they never mentioned a supply problem when mine was replaced at the beginning of the month.

Chat with Chrysler on Mopar.com. While $35/day may not cover the cost, that is the minimum you should get if the dealer did not give you a loaner (mine doesn't.) They can also tell from your VIN if a case manager has been assigned. Mine was very helpful in that she contacted the dealer almost every day and kept me updated on what she was hearing.

Once you get the battery back, monitor the voltage (dashboard screen 2, push the right arrow until battery voltage appears. It should be around 14V with the van running. With the van off, and your foot OFF the brake, push the start button once to go to ACC, and then again to go to run. "Press brake to start van" should appear. Press OK on the steering ( no brake,) and the voltage should appear. With no lights, etc in the van, it should be around 12V. If it is much lower, take a picture and head back to the dealer.

Many decades ago (yes, I'm and O.F. :eek: ) I sold battery testing equipment to auto repair shops and car dealers. We were trained on the basics, emphasizing the point you made, jerry17. Vehicle owners need to know this, but few do. Lead acid batteries have been used in cars since before anyone here was born. They are excellent at what they do for this function. They need to be kept at full charge and only called upon for brief use. They should never be allowed to discharge, as that causes them to deteriorate and become permanently damaged. Until the last two decades or so, cars with the ignition switch off and the doors closed created zero drain on the battery.

Modern vehicles, starting with entry alarm systems, have had "always hot" accessory creep. We now have computers that stay on to recognize our fobs, accept live software updates, transmit problems to monitoring services, and send information to our cell phones. Lead acid batteries were not designed for this abuse. They are not rechargeable, they are "keep-always-charged-able". (Yes, I know about "deep-cycle" versions for golf carts and trolling motors, but they are band-aid engineering jobs which introduce problems that make them unsuitable for car use.)

The lithium-ion batteries used in your cell phones and most electric vehicles (including the Pachy) are designed for deep discharge and recharge use. They are much more expensive than lead-acid, and need to be protected and handled carefully. Personally, I'd like to see l-i batteries used as the accessory supplement battery in cars like the gas Pacifica, and leave the lead-acid battery alone to do the job it does best: reliably start the darn engine!

I am currently going thru another battery replacement (#2) I just had the aux battery replaced because they Pacifica would not start. I also thought the full size battery was for cranking but the dealer said it was the aux battery. It took almost a month to get my first battery and now 2 months later same thing again. One more issue like this and I will be exploring no lemon. Towing the Pacifica to the dealer on Tuesday ?

After the van not starting again I finally decided to take both batteries out and have them tested. Turns out the auxiliary battery was swollen and cracked down one whole corner.I also live near Phoenix, I'm wondering if they ever tested the batteries in the heat?

I am having the same issue too, but they are “out” of aux batteries. The dealer rep said he’d ask his boss to get a different battery for me (e.g. pay for a non oem battery). I’ll check with them today, if no answer I’ll go to batteries plus bulbs and get a good battery!

The supply problem isn't a supply problem at all, it's a Chrylser problem.

Professor's seeing it firsthand: batteries are readily available, just not the Mopar ones. His dealer could have had a couple aftermarket batteries on hand in half an hour, but Chrysler's warranty doesn't want to pay for them. That doesn't look good when you consider that the dealer would have had a couple Mopar batteries in stock, if only Mopar would make them available.

I took the van to have the latest recall performed; the V53 recall. Since I had to take the van in, I asked that the ESS system be looked at since the system has not operated for months now regardless of the length of trips taken, including several hundred miles on the highway. Just picked up the van and was told that both batteries tested bad and were replaced under warranty (van in service 22 months with 4,500 miles). ESS system working properly now - we will see how long this lasts. Prior to taking the van in, other than ESS system not working, no issues with starting, engine shutting off randomly, etc. If it weren’t for the recall, I would not have taken the van in just for the ESS issue. I’m glad I did as the main battery would have failed at some point. BTW, I was given a 2018 PacHy as a rental - quite impressed with the drive train in the short time I had it.
