All I can find is the mute button.........

When the van is running I can push the mute button on the radio and it mutes.........next time I get into the van and start it the radio comes back on.

Is there an off button for the radio ??

No, I don't think so. I turn the volume down to zero. I believe it has something to do with the Active Noise Control, which uses the radio to emit the cancelling signals. I am interested in seeing exactly what the ANC it does, but cannot figure out how to deactivate it.

The inability to turn off the radio actually doesn't have anything to do with the Active Noise Cancelling. It's a design choice with Uconnect and is the same across all of their vehicles that use it. You can't turn the radio off in my Jeep Cherokee either, which does not have ANC.

By the way, there is also no way to turn ANC off in the Pacifica. If the engine is running, ANC is on.

Randytj - do you mean that even with the volume turned all the way down when you turn off the vehicle, that when you restart the van, the radio volume is back up?

This has been true with just about all the vehicles we've had since 2000. In our Mounteer, if we turned the radio off, everything went off including the GPS. With our Avalanche, we couldn't turn it off. In both we just turned the volume down to zero, just like with our Pacifica.

And to answer your question, no, the volume doesn't go back up each time you start, it stays where you set it.

Hi folks,

How coincidental - I just posted the exact same thread in the 'other' Pacifica forum and was about to do so here. Thanks to this thread, I now have my answer. It is hard to believe that with so many sharp minds designing and building this vehicle (or UConnect in general), some idiot and/or committee decided that they would not allow the radio to be turned off. Most of the time I do not mind the radio 'coming to life' as soon as the car starts up...but, depending on who my 'guests' might be, it can be either 'inappropriate' or 'loud' or whatever. I will certainly try setting the volume to near zero next time to see if that works. But really, for such a 'smart' car (and system in general) it is surprising that this simple concept (on/off), around since radios were invented, is not present.

Yeah, It's an odd decision, and I doubt we'll ever know why it was made. It wasn't always that way. The 1st generation of Uconnect 8.4 that I had in my 2012 Dodge Journey allowed you to turn off the radio. The power button was in the same place the mute button is now. But starting with generation 2, which I now have in my 2014 Jeep Cherokee, the power button became a mute button.

Now you've got me kinda missing those old volume controls that you turned counterclockwise till they went 'click'. I think from the time they added clocks and especially remote controls to appliances the off switch has become an "enter low power mode and pretend to be off switch", haha.

I read that the UConnect user manual and other files can be updated while the van is 'off'. When I send a 'lock' or 'start' command from my iPhone some embedded controller, perhaps UConnect, is receiving that command, starting the van and configuring the AC and responding back. If you are trying to live "off the grid" this is not the vehicle you want. :) It only pretends to be sleeping...

It would be nice if they would have put in a start up preset volume so that no matter where you turn it up and shut off the car then it restarts at preset volume. If you last volume was lower than preset then it restarts there.

My Volvo does that.

Semi-related (but not)...

The other aspect of the radio's amnesia that is irritating is that when connecting one's iPhone to the USB port beside the AUX-in jack (the DATA USB port) and using the iPhone as an iPod... the head/Uconnect will AUTOMATICALLY switch to a "radio" source either once you disconnect the cable... or if the iPhone is not yet connected once you start the vehicle. So it means you must continually go in to the settings and explicitly switch your source back to USB - each-and-every time. I would prefer it to offer-up total silence and let ME decide to change the source *IF* I want to.

I know this is not related to "turning-off" the radio - it just reminded me of this and I wanted to vent. :)

We now return you to your previously scheduled forum thread, now in-progress.

On the LX trim you can hit a button on the back of the steering wheel to change the audio source. It's a little easier for me to tap the button twice and get back to my podcasts when I start it up vs using the touchscreen.

This is similar to the fact that the DVD starts up every time I start the car, even if it was stopped when I turned off the car last. I always wonder what people think when they see me driving alone in my car with Despicabe Me 2 playing on the back screens! Usually I just let it go because you know kids just watch stuff over and over but if it's at a spot they really love I have to fiddle with it to turn it off so it doesn't play through the movie when they're not in the car. Maybe it's a setting I can adjust but this thread reminded me of it. (On the plus side, I always had to fiddle to turn ON the DVD in my old car so when they're with me it's nice!)

Just bought a 2018 Touring L and was flabbergasted when I realized I can't turn off the radio. My 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited didn't have this "issue". I wonder if it's a matter of trim level?

Who designs this crap?
