We live in Las Vegas, and my wife is on a trip to Phoenix. She called me saying the car wouldn't start.

1) Get in the car,
2) press Start, Radio and A/C Come on
3) Dash then says press Brake and Start message (as expected)

When she presses the button though, nothing would happen. No starter noise.
I'm not entirely clear if literally nothing was occurring, or if the dash as turning back off.

I had her go through start sequence WITHOUT foot on the brake, go to vehicle info and battery is reporting 12.1V.

She then puts her foot on the brake, presses start button, and everything turns off.
Asked her to go back through the sequence like she normally would, with her foot on the brake.
Radio comes on, get the dash message, press start the second time, everything turns off.
Crap --- Told her to call roadside assistance, maybe we need to jump the car. (although I didn't understand why all the starter wasn't even trying to turn over).

Hung up.

Call her back two minutes later and told her to try this.
1) get out of car - Lock it.
2) Press Remote Start on the key fob.

Sure enough, the Car starts write up. Had her get in the car, she presses the start button and it releases the security.
Told her to drive home to Vegas and don't turn off the car.

So what's happening here?

In your first number sequence, 2 and 3 are out of sequence. You should not press Start before applying the brake (that puts it in ACC mode). When she gets home (and I hope safely and without incident), try entering the car with the fob (just entering the car should bring up the Brake/Start message), apply the brake, and then press Start. If that doesn't work, you do have a problem.

I hope all is well with your van and that it was just a sequencing error even though that would be frustrating. Trying the remote start was a good idea, glad it worked.

You probably won't get any starter noise like cars used to make if the battery is dead. If the battery is dead, other system messages might come up and really confuse a person, so it is good to be aware of this and start with trying to jump the battery before having it towed.

Last week a 4 month old (replacement) main battery in my van was dead when I went out to start my van. It was pretty obvious in my case since the power lift gate didn't work and everything seemed pretty dead. I also tried the remote start, but it didn't work. I even got all the crazy system messages when I kept trying to start it. I've been reading the forum for awhile so I was pretty sure it was a dead battery, but I kept hoping it was a glitch so I checked the battery reading in the RUN position (without the brake) out of curiosity and it was about 8.6 V.

I was able to jump start the van and drive it to the dealer where lots of low voltage codes were pending. The battery was tested and replaced (the next day) since the battery was put in the van (under warranty) in January by that dealer. I'm not sure why the (4 month) battery failed so early. The OEM battery lasted 28 months.

We apologize for the inconvenience your wife experienced on her trip, MacGurutx. If you run into any concerns in the future, be sure to send us a direct message. We'd be glad to escalate your inquiry to a case specialist who'll help with the concern.

Yes, Waldo is correct!! Don't push anything until the brake pedal is depressed and held down, that should take care of it......
