When I exit my Pacifica, I like to use the button on the outside door handle to lock the van. Sometimes I have to push the button once, sometimes twice and sometimes 3 or more times before I hear the doors lock. What is the proper way to lock the van using this push button. Also, if the passenger door is still open can I lock the van this way?

You probably are well aware that you don't grasp the handle while pressing the button, just a friendly reminder. As far as locking the open passenger door while pressing the button, I'd say yes.

I don't have problems with lock with the door handle button. I suggest making sure the key is close enough to the vehicle?

Key in pocket next to the door.
Assuming you're not grasping the handle when you push the button, something's not working properly. Does it do the same thing with both key fobs?

I frequently use the passenger-side button since I usually have the sliding door open to get my wife's walker out of the back. I just push the button without grasping the handle. The doors won't lock if the sliding door is still open. One time I tried to lock the doors using the button on the driver's side and it wouldn't lock. One push, two pushes, by the third push I realized that the fob was inside the vehicle. I think by the fifth push, it would have locked regardless....

The only time I have experienced the button not locking the doors is when I first got my Pacifica and didn't press the button firmly enough. Otherwise it always works and it does lock the doors with the sliders open.

Are you sure about that? Mine locks regardless of whether or not the sliding doors are open.

I don't think it ever would have locked. I'm pretty sure the exterior lock buttons don't do anything if you're not standing by the door with the key fob.

You are right, the problem is with the door handle button on the passenger side, it's a bit flaky as to just how you push it, pushing it straight doesn't always work, pushing on one side works. The switch probably needs adjusting but not worth a trip to the dealer. Driver's side works regardless of how you push it.

Our Cherokee manual said if you pushed it five times, it would lock regardless. I was assuming that the Pacifica would work the same way.

That's talking about the lock button on the inside of the door, not the outside.

It looks like in this thread

http://www.pacificaforums.com/forum...n-i-know-there-door-open-when-i-lock-car.html

they concluded that you can't get it to respond differently with the current firmware
The User Guide page 12 said:
==================
Locking The Doors With A RKE
Key Fob
Push and release the LOCK button on the RKE
Key Fob to lock all doors and liftgate. The turn
signal lights will flash and the horn will chirp to
acknowledge the signal.

If one or more doors are open, or the liftgate is
open, the doors will lock. This is signaled by a quick flash of the turn signals.
==================

It does respond differently according to the manual, but my Pacifica responds the same.
