I've got about 10000 miles on my van and now twice I've had the same thing happen.
I park and push the start/stop button to shut down the engine. Thinking the van is turned off, I get out of the car, lock the doors, and come back hours later to find my engine running in idle and the "key FOB has left the vehicle" warning beeping.
Obviously this is part complete stupidity from me - but I've never done this with another vehicle! I guess I'm not pushing the button completely. But I wish the van would give me some sort of warning horn when I try to lock the doors with the engine still running. Instead everything is normal - I lock the doors and get a little horn beep indicating it was successful. And in a noisy parking garage have no idea that my car is still running!!
Ideally there would be an automatic shutoff if it idles too long? Or if the key fob leaves the engine shouldn't continue to run. Has this happened to anyone else?

Related to this, it is handy on the sienna when the vehicle continuously beeps when attempting to lock the vehicle when a side door is still open. Suppose the same thought could also apply when the vehicle is still running. Seems to be a sensible feature to request.

Yes, this happened to me once (<5000 miles). Now I just try to look at the button to be sure it is off. The doors aren't supposed to lock with the fob inside, or with the engine running (at first) but I thought I had locked my van too.

There is another thread called "When key fob leaves the van" you can check related to the fob leaving the vehicle with the engine running while someone is still in the vehicle, but there is a little bit there about not turning it off and leaving.

This happened to me twice.. Thinking it was off, I forgot to push the button.. Never did that with other vehicles with push start..

Would be nice if they had a feature where the Van would text you, engine on, key fob missing.. LOL I bet they would charge for that service.. lol

@bluesfox That would be ideal! I feel like an idiot for doing it twice, but it looks like I'm not the only one. A warning noise would be perfect. The idle is just perfectly quiet I guess!

Count me among the stupid, if that's what we are. I had trouble with the van locking, but didn't realize why. When we got back in after shopping, I find that the engine was still running. Fortunately, it was in "park", but I thought, "what if I didn't put it all the way into park and turned off the ignition switch, it would not turn off the engine and it could be in reverse or drive when I leave it running that way"..... A tribute to a very quiet engine, but easy to leave the engine running if you're not careful.

I'm the opposite. I sometime forget to put it park. As a previous Prius owner, the Prius would automatically go to park if you turn the car off while you have your foot on the brake. As the Pac has no real shifter, I sometime forget to put it in park. lol.

ezdays, for the condition you described, the parking brake will automatically engage.

On a test drive the salesman told me to take off my seatbelt, open the door, and get out, leaving the car in drive. The Pacifica engages the brake so the car doesn't run away on its own. I tested that feature the other day on my Pacifica to make sure that feature worked. Kinda strange feeling hoping that the car didn't run off and crash.

But I don't think the engine is quiet to the point that I wouldn't notice it was running. Only have about 500 miles on mine - do they get quieter as you break in the engine?

Happened to me today.... came out of the store after about 45 minutes and the van was

running. I know I locked the car, but did't check to see if the keyfob has left

the vehicle message was on the screen.

On the Limited, if the car is running the LED lights on the front are on.....

I have posted my experience with this issue in earlier threads, but to chime in, I find that my issue was placing my foot on the break pedal while attempting to push the Start / Stop dashboard button to shut the engine off. It is quite easy to shut the engine off but start it again without knowing it. If you place the Pacifica in Park and then quite consciously do not put your foot on the break pedal while you push the Start / Stop button the engine will always shutdown.

What might exacerbate the situation is the radio doesn't turn off when you turn the ignition off by default. I set mine to turn off with the ignition just for this reason.

You guys left the car on once or twice. I left my on many times because it is a Hybrid and is completely silent even when the ignition is on.
So the question is, whether it will kick the ICE on when parked in your situation after a while when the battery goes down? That could be really dangerous if parked in an enclosed garage. I guess it will take something similar to the Anton Checkov incident to bring the issue to highlight.

Doesn't the hybrid shut off if left idle after an amount of time passes? Like an hour?

Absolutely right. After an hour, in Park and in Ready mode (on) it will automatically shut down.

You mean after making sure enough Carbon monoxide has been emitted to kill everyone in the household? :D.
