Has anyone measured efficiency of ICE charging, let's say when the hood is open, compared to actually driving on ICE?

It says it charges at around 7kw at idle, close to level 2 charging. So let's say you have to drive 30 miles and you have 0 charge. Would it be more efficient to charge with hood open? Or just drive that distance on ICE?

Every energy conversion has losses. Going from ICE->MG->battery->MG->wheels must always have lower efficiency than ICE->wheels directly. The only way it could be better to charge from the ICE is if the ICE was able to operate at a much more efficient operating point when charging. However, 7kW is very low power. Internal combustion engines are most efficient at full throttle, and the ICE is rated at ~180kW. There is no way it can be very efficient generating only 7kW.
