Can someone clear up for me how rebates work vs discounts the dealer takes off. My work has a deal to take 1% off invoice price, but my dealer says that he's already discounted the van below that amount. I do understand that because I can clearly see it in the numbers.

Rebates are different where I can just cut that amount off of the sale price correct? So the Sams offer of $1,000 is just $1k off the selling price, if I did financing, that's just $500 off sale price..... my dealer won't come back to me and say something like "oh I've already knocked down teh price of the car where those rebates don't benefit you"

Thanks!

dmg2010 is correct. Negotiate the best price you can with the dealer first. Then take the Chrysler rebates off of that.

Thanks. I'm currently working between 2 dealers working on sales price not including rebates. One dealer is giving me an extra rebate option that the other is not. How can I independently research all rebates that are currently available for me? I've tried to search but I get lost in my own results.

The most comprehensive list of active incentives I have found is on the NADA website:

Also keep in mind that in most states, sales tax is computed before rebates. I.e. the rebates are sort of like a payment on the selling price of the car.
Really? I knew some states did that, but most?

Edmunds has a chart here.
Wow. It's disheartening (and surprising) to see that 30 states charge tax on the rebates. I'm also surprised how many states charge tax on the value of trade-ins. I guess I should consider myself lucky that my state does neither. If they did, it would have cost me another $1710 in tax on the Pacifica!

This does underscore why it's important that people use the pre-TTL price when comparing deals here. Taxes can vary GREATLY by state.

The company that I work for AT&T also provides the 1% off invoice price and I was planning on purchasing my van that way next year, I didn't realize that the some of incentives and rebates cannot be combined with the Employee Affiliate Rewards Program I may need to research this further.

Isn't something like Costco's buying program or TrueCar better than the affiliate programs? Typically it looks like you get at least $500 off invoice that way. $500 is more than 1% off invoice if the car is less than $50K.

And if you are willing to negotiate yourself, I think you should be able to do better. The dealer has to pay TrueCar, etc. for the lead of bringing you in. I've read that about $300.

Agreed. These buying programs are good for people who don't feel comfortable negotiating.

I don't mind negotiating but since more than likely I will be ordering a Limited with specific colors and options, Im assuming most dealers don't give much discount if you custom order.

Not true at all. While I do think you can generally get a better price for a vehicle that's in stock, you can certainly negotiate on a special order. Invoice price minus half the holdback is definitely doable. Several people have reported doing even better than that.

We are ordering but I'm putting the dealers up against eachother and letting them know where they stand. Lowest offer wins. Doing email communication but I'm curious if being in person would help the final push down since they don't want to see you walk out the door.

Please report back and tell me how it worked out this sounds like a pretty awesome strategy I'm taking down all the notes as I go since I'm waiting until the 2018 model is ready so I have some time

I haven't been able to get a dealer to give me a special order price over email. I've gotten non-special order pricing over email though. But then each dealer has a different car so it's hard to get them to compete head to head.

Have you tried making them an offer instead of trying to get them to give you an offer?
