I've spent ~3 months and talked with a lot of dealers (I'll probably do a post summarizing my experiences with various SoCal dealers), but I finally got my red Touring-L Plus with cognac/toffee/alloy interior! Major options were:
8 Passenger Seating
Tire and Wheel Group
Hands-Free doors and liftgate
Advanced Safetytec
8.4 inch U-Connect Nav
Spare Tire
Deal was as follows:
MSRP: $44,235
Selling price: $40,221.95 (dealer discount of $4013.05 see below)
TTL + Doc fee: $4078.18 (CA tax is pretty high)
Rebates: $4500 total
Customer Cash: $1500
Conquest: $1000 (required a copy of my VW registration. No trade-in.)
Sam's Club: $1000 (dealer hesitated to try it but it went through.)
???: $1000 (Contract says Non-APR, Pacifica. I'm guessing dealer coupon.)
OTD: $39,829
I'm not sure if the dealer was trying to pulling a bait and switch.
I emailed them asking for their best price mentioning I had an offer from another dealer. Their internet sales guy quoted me $39,313 as the selling price. However, when I later asked for the OTD it was more than $1000 higher than I expected. I left him a voice mail but he didn't call back.
I ended up driving about 100 miles to the dealer, Poway Chrysler, to see what was up. They had the car and after a long and detailed credit application despite the fact I wasn't financing (who has 3 references ready on demand?) they presented me with the too high OTD. I called them out on it and showed them the quoted price plus a spreadsheet with the expected OTD that I hod worked out.
The sales manager (aka closer by the sales guy) left for a bit and came back with the above deal which was within $50 of my expected OTD. I think that was because the selling price was higher but they added the extra $1000 rebate which resulted in more tax.
While working through the final paperwork with the financing guy, he offered the Mopar lifetime warranty at $2580 after a little haggling. According to what he showed me, it's $50 above their cost. This is also in-line with what I've read on this forum.
Should I keep it? As I understand it, I have 60 days to cancel for a full refund. I plan on keeping the car 10+ years (my current Passat is over 14 years old.). Mileage may not be super high as my commute is only about 14 miles daily.
Also, out of curiosity, how long does the delivery process usually take? From arrival at the dealer until I left was over 4 hours. I didn't test drive and sat down to start the paperwork within 10 minutes.
