Buikd sheet for my Limited says under options for my VIN Pacifica "5 Additional Gallons of Gas". So with those 5 more gallons, what is my tank capacity?
Adding 5 gallons of gas to the tank doesn't increase its capacity. It's still 19 gallons.

Pretty sure that that's referring to actual gasoline - i.e. it will come with at least 5 gallons of gas in the tank. I don't think they offer options for tank capacity.

That seems like an odd thing to me, you'd think they would ship them un-gassed to reduce weight and risk. But it is very possible that there is some kind of engineering explanation to do it that way!

So why does the build sheet imply my van has 5 gallons more than the baseline on the build sheet 19 gallon tank
It doesn't. It says 5 additional gallons of gas, not 5 additional gallons of gas tank capacity.

Aside from the previous responder's sarcasm and unnecessary snark...

They basically shipped your vehicle with more fuel than usual - who knows why - maybe some are track-tested at random and require more fuel... tough to say... but I'm guessing it's a common-enough practice that they have a line item for it on the sheet.

I wouldn't think much of it. You have a standard tank with a splash of extra fuel upon delivery.

So what are the 5 additional gallons mentioned in the build sheet?
It's just 5 gallons of gasoline. I've seen this on many build sheets. Not sure if it's on all of them, but it's certainly not uncommon.

I wonder if the additional gas is associated with extra initial mileage on the odometer as if it was sent somewhere for additional testing or adjustment. I've heard they send them somewhere nearby if you get the factory trailer hitch option.

BrettP,

Interesting observation. My Pacifica has the trailer tow package and the 5 additional gallons of fuel. The extra fuel did not help much as I had to stop and add fuel during the test drive. I think there was around 50 miles on the odometer. The low fuel alert was on at start up. Probably could have made it back to the dealer but not willing to take the chance. Sales person gave me cash to add fuel when I set out for the test drive.

Since the 5 gallons is only mentioned in the option area of the build sheet, I assume a Pacifica with zero options would not have any gas from the factory???
Every Pacifica has to have some gas from the factory. They test the engine, drive it out of the factory, drive it onto a train car, drive it on and off of trucks. All of that takes gas, and it would really suck to have it run out mid-transit. Maybe the standard is only 1 gallon, but they add an additional 5 gallons depending on where it needs to be driven for options or how many train/truck transfers it will need to get where it's going.

Don't overthink it. Most dealers will top it off anyway before you take delivery.

I have bought vehicles from Ford, GM and Chrysler. Every dealer has filled my tank full upon delivery to me with the exception of Chrysler. When I bought my 2015 F150, I got the extended 36 gal Fuel tank which is upgrade from the standard 23 gal the truck comes with. It was full. Same with all my Chevy's. This Pacifica is my 3rd new Chrysler product and it had a half a tank and has that 5 gallon thing on the build sheet. Previously I have had 2012 and 2014 Town and Country, very little gas was provided in them. I thought it was just a dealer thing on a lease. Had I purchased it, I would of expected a full tank. So I took that 5 gal as an extension, on the 19 gal standard. I will try to pay attention to gal used next time I fill up.

The manufacturers don't pay for the dealers to fill up the gas tanks, so the cost of doing that falls on the dealer. Some just deliver the car to the customer without a full tank while others will fill it and charge you for the gas. Good dealers will eat that cost, but a lot of them don't.
