Hi All,

Our 2018 (49K) Hybrid has a rattle and I'm looking for help on how to get the issue fixed. Our Carmax had it in to replace the servo actuator dash problem, and they told me the mechanic could not hear anything regarding the rattle, so they would not advance a repair. However, they will pay for a diagnosis at our local Dodge dealer.

The sound is most present outside the vehicle on a cold/ICE start and it's louder on one (driver side). It was not present the whole time I 24 hour test drove the vehicle. It developed after a family trip down to LA. When I first heard it, it sounded to me like something was happening in the wheel well -- or close to where the charging port is. The sound does not get worse with road conditions/potholes, and it doesn't get worse rocking the body of the van while driving.

I don't really know much about shocks/struts/arm controls/sway bars -- but this seems to be higher up...like near the same level as the headlights but further back in the engine compartment.

Any help on pinpointing it is appreciated.

Does it make the noise while vehicle is stationary? If so, pretty well rules out any suspension components.
Try to capture the sound with your phone and post it here.

I can definitely capture it with my phone or an even better quality recorder. Seems most active at first start on ICE in morning.

Thank you for reviewing/response

That would be coming from inside the transaxle. Put it in run the pop the hood to start the ICE. I am sure you will hear it coming from the transaxle.

You can clearly hear the rattle at 25 sec in, after the ICE start revs decline a bit on this cold start.

The second clip is the same sound from inside the cabin driving, just the two thumps I could catch at the very start. Hearing it from inside can be rather tricky.

I have/had the same rattle. Happens sometimes and mostly when the ice disengages but really can happen at idle almost any time.

Dealer spent a lot of time trying to figure it out on mine. Only reproduced the noise once and for the service advisor. The tech never reproduced it. They ultimately decided to replace the entire transmission on mine (only had 12k miles). Took 3 months to do the job. Didn't fix it but it rattles quietter and less frequently....so meh. 50k miles now...guess it isn't a major issue or something would have blown up by now.

Maybe I'll borrow your clip and play it for them. See what they say. Good luck.

Van wouldn't remote start this morning. When I entered and did manually, the check engine light was on.

I want to try and get it refunded with Carmax under the CA lemon law.

If I can prove that the transaxle/transmission is faulty (within 18 months delivery date of vehicle) then I meet the criteria right?

My 2021 did that day one on delivery. It stopped after I had the PCM, HCP, and AHCP software updated.

Our van had all the recalls and updates performed before we drove it off the lot from CarMax Santa Rosa.

What is hilarious is that the service department at CarMax Santa Rosa is still saying they can't hear any rattle in the clip!!!

They are obviously delaying what they know is a costly repair...and putting my families well being in jeopardy by doing so.
