Last week, my family was awoken in the middle of the night by an incredibly large boom - my wife thought our house had taken a direct hit from lightning. I ran to find the cause, looking into my garage to see my 2018 hybrid completely engulfed in what I could only describe as an inferno. After my family evacuated safely, we noted that our garage door had been blown out to the end of our driveway. Apparently what we heard was quite a powerful explosion in the garage.

The van had been plugged into a 40A JuiceBox, which itself was plugged into a 14-50 NEMA receptacle. It had begun charging around 7:30ish, which means the vehicle had been fully charged for at least 7 hours when the explosion happened shortly after 5AM.

Initial, unofficial assessment from a certified fire investigator indicate that the fire began on the side of our garage where the Pacifica was parked, about halfway back into the garage (near both the JuiceBox and the middle of the vehicle). The evidence indicates that the fire did not start under the hood, though I'm not sure if we have enough info to tell if it could have started somehow at the charging port?

The fire burned incredibly hot, incredibly fast. It warped siding on the house across the street. The fire started in the garage before moving up into the attic above and then throughout the whole roof. After more than an hour of firefighting, the entire roof of our house was destroyed and the house is essentially a total loss.

After seeing previous posts regarding similar fires that fortunately happened in driveways, I'm concerned about what appears to be a growing pattern. Who's to say whether the next fire might happen in a house with bedrooms above the garage? We have not contacted Chrysler, though I'm told by the fire investigator that he is notifying them shortly.

Picture below is of the aftermath. Pacifica is the left car in the garage.

That is insane, must have been frightening, just glad everyone is ok! I'm speechless.

I googled and there's more details and pictures here: https://wwmt.com/news/local/portage-home-catches-fire

It's amazing how it melted the siding across the street and burned the tree, yet the osb right in front of the van looks virtually untouched. Was it covered with wallboard and it broke off? It looks like the rear hatch melted off too.

Did everyone get checked out medically? The explosion must have been deafening.

Glad everyone is okay as stuff and things can be replaced . Curious , was the house charger installed by a certified electrician ? . And was the van on a charging schedule ? Did you download or look at the data from the juicebox to see if it was actually stopped charging ? The unit usually takes a tad over 2 hours to charge from 0% , curious what it was doing the last 4ish hours ? . Hope you figure it all out and everything works out for you .

Glad to hear everyone got out safely. Please keep us informed as to what the investigators find out. I would think the insurance companies would be eager to find out too.

Was the gas tank of the van and/or the other car full? Were there any flammables stored in the garage? Who installed the outlet for the Juicebox?

Interesting to note the similar timeframe of the fire in the "Pacifica Hybrid burnt to the ground" thread which was plugged in at 7pm and exploded at 3am.

Van was full, other car was 1/4 tank. There was less than a gallon in a sealed storage can (for my snowblower) on the other end of the garage in the 3rd stall.

See my other post re: installation. As for schedule, we didn't bother so it started charging as soon as we plugged it in. I never downloaded the app, I wonder if that information could ever be retrieved after the fact. Any idea?

Do I read correctly that at this time there is no indication the fire had anything at all to do with the Pacifica? The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and we are only guessing it had anything to do with the Pacifica because it may have started in the bay where the Pacifica was parked?

Your doubts are noted. It could have been started by a mouse pissing on the AAA batteries in a child's toy phone.

However, on the outside long shot that the Pachy was not an innocent bystander, please consider not parking yours under the kids' bedroom.

It would also be a kindness if all the ICE only Pacifica owners who have experienced white hot explosions (either in your garage or parked in front of the house) would post pictures here. There should be at least ten times as many.

My language is conservative here in the thread because the investigation is ongoing. Given the potential risks to other owners if the van is implicated and there is a systemic problem with these vehicles, I felt it warranted to post with the appropriate caveats and qualifications.

Based on what we've been told "off the record", it did originate from the van, probably the Li battery. However, nothing's official until the entire investigation is complete. Probably two weeks out for that.

@Atfranks, thank you for taking the time to keep this forum informed. The trauma of the loss you have experienced must be overwhelming, which makes your posts here beyond the call of duty. Again, thank you.

This is unbelievably upsetting to read but I sincerely thank you, in a moment of such chaos, stress and anxiety, to take the time to not only share but to do so in such a way that is allowing other owners to make their own choice. I’m not sure I’d be able to do the same.

As a father of 4, this is beyond disturbing and I sincerely hope they get to the root cause of these fires.

We’re extremely relieved to hear your family is safe and sound but so sorry for your loss. I know “things” can be replaced but I can only imagine what you are going through.

Best wishes and thank you again for keeping us informed.

I appreciate raising a potential issue to a community with safety in mind, but like other posters it's important to withhold judgment until there is some actual proof or professional statement.

Your title says "House fire - Hybrid 18 Pacifica strongly indicated as cause". That title does not reflect the contents of this thread. At this time there is no report and the investigation is not complete.

Did you need and did you get the updates under NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V740000 ?

I still say get the fireball extinguisher and place it in the car. It won't save the van but it will probably help save the house. Mine is under the center console.
