I have a Touring-L Plus with Uconnect 8.4.

I was playing around today with HVAC settings, and I see that I can turn on the front ac without turning on the rear, but when I turned on the rear the front would also turn on with it.
I can set individual temperatures as well as fan speed, but I couldn't get only the rear to work without the front.
Is this the way it's designed? Or is there some operator error?

Thanks

I believe that's the way it's designed to work.

Why would I need the front ac on in order to have the rear operational? I would've thought that's the idea of split zones? My kids in the rear are cold and want heat, but I'm perfectly fine and don't need anything
At least for the A/C, my guess would be that the front HVAC control is the one that requests the compressor clutch to engage. Even though you have a "split" system, you still only have a single A/C compressor, and it needs to be on to cool the air for the back. This is the way it's also worked on all of my previous vehicles with rear A/C (if the front doesn't turn the compressor on, the rear doesn't cool).

I understand the compressor needs to be on, but they should be able to electronically control that fans, the same way it's electronically controlled for which mode you want, top, bottom etc

Your best bet is to just leave the front climate on Auto. If you're comfortable, just adjust your zone up or down to the point that no heat or A/C is called for.
