So now the malfunction indicator light came on after starting the car and does not go away. The manual says to run the car through a few cycles and it is probably due to a malfunction such as gas cap or fuel quality. Does not really help much. The car does not have a gas cap anyway. The message board is empty and does not mention anything wrong. Has anyone run into this problem and how was it fixed and what was it due to? I would want to avoid going to the dealer another time. Thanks.

Stop off to aurozone and they will plug in the OBD II scan tool and read the stored codes. Then you can punch that into google and you will likely find a bunch of info out there.
The MIL light by itself doesn't tell you anything other than you have a problem. You'll likely end up at the dealer anyway to fix the issue as your van should be within its warranty period, so you might as well just get it in to get repaired. Or check the code and find out if you want to drive it with whatever issue is there. But most MIL items don't self correct and there is no gas cap on these to tighten to make and evap code disappear, like on other vehicles, so, yeah, just get it in for service. There is something wrong.

Could be anything but at least get an OBD code check ASAP to make sure it is not an engine misfire code. Some causes of misfire can destroy (or significantly shorten the life of) catalytic converters which are notorious for being both expensive and not covered under many warranties including the Chrysler extended warranty.

A single cylinder misfire should be a quick fix with a coil pack replacement. I'm surprised they don't have parts on hand. This is the same engine they've been using in fca products for a few years. But good luck, and glad you got it in quickly, because that misfire condition is bad news for emissions, as posted previously, and the cylinders themselves.

It looks like the coils may have changed with the Pentastar refresh that debuted on the 2016 Grand Cherokee/Durango and is now in our Pacificas (p/n 68223569AC). If it were the same as the coils from the prior years (p/n 05149168AI / 05149168AH), then I would definitely agree..

So it has been over 10 days and the car is still in the shop. I stopped by to get some information as they don't do really communicate to find out the car is parked in a garage with its engine gutted open waiting for spare parts. The mechanic said the parts are not readily available and it could still be a while. I have a loaner but it is not a Pacifica and I feel powerless in what to do. Another 2 weeks and the car will qualify as a lemon. That's not what I have signed up for. Again the symptoms were an irregular idle engine and a malfunctioning light indicator. I hope no one else has this problem. I am still hoping the parts come soon.

it was diagnosed as a cylinder 2 misfire. It may take a week or more to order the parts and fix it.

Did they tell you exactly what part they ordered?

A misfire on just one single cylinder on a brand new engine that has no compression issues almost has to be:
1- bad coil or spark plug
2- bad fuel injector
3- bad/loose wiring.
4- bad ECM

All those parts are easily accessible and takes only minutes to swap out with any other Pacifica on the lot (and perhaps other Chrysler vehicles for some parts). Just saying...

Not so quick, remember my story. We had a "check engine" light come on just minutes after leaving the dealership, and the shop determined quickly that it was a bad EGR valve. None on hand and so when they went to order one, they were told to contact Chrysler engineering first. They had them swap one out with another Pacifica and it worked and so I should have been on my way that day, but Chrysler told them to put it back where they got it and they'd send a new one. A few days later they sent a repair kit instead. Nope, that didn't work so another wait until the sent the part. Total time was almost two weeks.

The point is, they may not have permission to swap parts around regardless that doing so is in their best interest to keep a customer happy. Fortunately, I did have a new Pacifica as a loaner but it was still short-sighted not to just leave the swapped part in and replace the part in the other vehicle when it finally did come in.

Hi guys,

I've been dealing with a CEL problem for 5 months now and three service trips into my dealer and the Check Engine Light is back on again. In searching through the forums and topics, this particular thread sounds closest to my issue, but I'm not sure how ecknobhill's problem was solved. Anyway, here are my details in case anyone has additional ideas or suggestions.

2018 Pacifica Limited
- CEL came on around 22k mileage. Went off by itself about a week later.
- CEL came on again around 23k mileage. Drove for several weeks waiting to see if it would go off. Took it in to dealer and it was diagnosed as P0305 Misfire Cylinder #5. They said it was a bad injector so they replaced the injector and PCV valve. Length of Service = 1 WEEK.
- CEL came on again a couple days after getting the vehicle back. Waited a couple weeks and new tank of gas and CEL still on. Took it back in to dealer again at 24.5k mileage and they said it was the same code. This time they replaced the coil pack and plugs and it appeared ok again. Length of Service = 2 WEEKS.
- CEL came on again a couple days after getting the vehicle back. Waited another week or so and took it back to the dealer for the third time, now at 25.5k mileage, and with the same OBD code P0305 Cylinder #5 Misfire. This is where things went off the rails. After a couple weeks with the van, dealer said they were having trouble diagnosing. Said that they thought it was the EGR valve and were waiting on part. After another week plus of waiting, I told them I needed the van for a music event that upcoming weekend and rain was forecast so the pickup they loaned me would not cut it. Four days later than when they promised it would be done, they said it was ready so I picked it up and asked what they did and they said they couldn't find the problem so they put it back together and reset the CEL. I was not happy as they had my vehicle for 1 MONTH and made no repairs.
- CEL came on two days later and I'm back to square one. I am wondering if this could be an ECM issue and when I brought that up to the dealer, they said they could not replace that unless the code indicated it.

I'm getting really frustrated with this van which is a shame because I really loved it at first. Is anyone else experiencing similar CEL issues? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

Have you considered asking Chrysler to buy it back as a lemon?

Yes, I considered it, but the NJ Lemon Law threshold is 24,000 miles and I just surpassed it. I contacted the NJ agency and questioned that since my problem started prior to reaching 24k miles and they said because I had not notified FCA prior to reaching 24k then I could not file under the Lemon Law. They recommended notifying FCA as the vehicle is still under warranty. I am in the process of this now. At this rate, I just worry I'll reach 36k miles before this gets fixed and somehow be denied further warranty work.

Funny thing is I like the vehicle and want to keep it. I just want it fixed!

Maybe try a different dealership? I had vastly different experiences with similar repairs on our van by going to two different dealers. The second was much better than the first.
As for your issue, if it’s not the coil pack, injector or spark plug, then maybe the wiring to the coil or injector is bad. There’s only so many things it could be. Or possible low compression, if the fuel injector leaked and washed the cylinder, it could have created damage to the cylinder wall and cause a compression leak. But they should be able to diagnose. I’d go to a different dealership.

I'm not sure this will help the original poster but here is my experience (may help someone in the future). First, see the attached picture. To be clear, THIS IS NOT the cluster view in our Pacificas but it is the only image i could quickly find with BOTH what I'm calling a "malfunction light" AND a check engine light (I failed to take a pic of my own situation). So, you can see in the pic there is a red LED near 0 mph on the speedometer. This is separate from the check engine light. We have both the red LED and the check engine light in our Pacificas. Instead of the check engine light, this red LED light came on for me (and never went away) a couple months ago. Even with the check engine light off, the system still spit out error codes that said said basically EVERY system/module suffered low voltage. Autozone's battery check did NOT detect that the battery was bad. However, the dealership's overnight battery test determined it was in fact a bad core WITHIN the battery, and that the battery simply needed replaced.

Low voltage and bad grounds will cause many issues with random codes and such, but in this case, the poster is referring to a single code that keeps recurring. I would guess not an ECM thing but something mechanical. But it is good to know about the red LED.
