I have a touring l and it seems crazy to spend $600 for activation code.....any cheaper ideas????

Your smartphone (iPhone, Android) is an excellent NAV. If you don't wish to use your phone then a stand alone nav like a Garmin NUVI works really well and the last one of those I bought is still getting free map and software upgrades 5 years later.

I bought one of these Garmin's and it works great

Garmin DriveSmart 60LMT
I too have the Touring-L, and bought the activation code back in December when they were running a special with a $100 off. I previously had a Garmin NUVI in my 14 T&C, that was great, but for some reason it quit working (age ?), there fore I bought the activation code. If I had it to do over I would have bought another NUVI for a fraction of the cost, and in my estimation a far superior GPS than what I have now. This in vehicle unit is not nearly as user friendly.

I have a Limited, two months old. Just took a trip from near Philadelphia to Cleveland and back. The Chrysler installed UConnect Nav looks and sounds good, but it is not as accurate as the Garmin Nav in my Old 2011 T&C Limited. Google Maps is far superior in Nav accuracy, route choosing and time estimation. I would encourage Chrysler to retrofit UConnect to enable Android Auto or the Apple equivalent or go back to a Garmin system.
For example, the Chrysler Nav wanted us to exit the PA turnpike for I-99 towards Altoona, PA which made no sense. It had outdated speed limits on the PA TPK and its eta for both trips was half an hour later than actual which Google Maps had correct from the beginning. It's use of traffic congestion is primitive compared to what Google Maps does with traffic input.

But isn't the built in Nav basically a Garmin Nuvi? Seems like it, right down to the icons and software structure.

Basically, yes. But some of the standalone Nuvi models have more functionality. I don't have a problem with the built-in navigation. It works fine for how I use it.

...built in Nav basically a Garmin Nuvi...
LOVE IT! Didn't know that! I hate the Honda NAV and love the Nuvi. Bought 3 versions in the past and use that despite the nav screen in the Ody Touring. Way easier to use, more POIs, and if the voice command is good, it will be awesome to have it built in.

Anybody know whether updates will be free or cost much for the Pac? Most Nuvis are LMT (Lifetime Maps and Traffic updates).

Map updates will not be free. Chrysler tends to release them every 2-3 years, and they cost $150. I believe the most current map version right now is from 2015, so I would expect an update to be available within the next year or so.
