Hello all, I just drove home a 2022 PacHy Limited last night and am super excited about it. At the dealership, I declined all extended warranty options because I don't like to make costly decisions under stress. However, when researching my options in the light of day I'll admit that I'm lost and confused. Can anyone help me navigate the options available for the extended warranties?

My warranty options, as I understand them:
  • Mopar offers 6 plans that they say are sold through the dealer:
    • Maximum Care
    • Added Care Plus
    • Guaranteed Automotive Protection (GAP)
    • Road Hazard Tire and Wheel
    • Auto Appearance
    • Scheduled Maintenance
  • However, my dealer (Autonation) tried to sell me on 6 plans that seem mostly similar but slightly different. I assume since Autonation is a huge dealership, these are "Autonation-specific" plans. How do these relate to Mopar?
    • Vehicle Protection Plan
    • Tire and Wheel Protection
    • Chrysler Maintenance
    • Dent Protection
    • Windshield Protection
    • Appearance Protection
  • There are official Mopar plan sellers (i.e. Ziegler Automotive Group, Chrysler Warranty Direct) who seem to offer 3 plans, 2 of which have the same name as the plans on the Mopar website
    • Maximum Care
    • Added Care Plus
    • Powertrain Plus
  • There are 3rd-party providers like Endurance Warranty, Carchex, etc. who offer their own warranty plans separate from Mopar.
Questions:
  • What are the main differences between these types of plans/providers?
  • If I were to buy a plan, which of these paths do you recommend I go down? Pros/cons?
  • Is there anything I should definitely avoid?

True. Statisitically you will lose money on an extended warranty. And if you didn't, they wouldn't offer them. It is also true that there are circumstances when you may have a repair bill that is several thousand $, but far more many of us will have our warranty expire having never (or infrequently) used them.

  • If I were to buy a plan, which of these paths do you recommend I go down? Pros/cons? Mopar: It is backed by the manufacturer and can be used by all Mopar dealers. As with Mopar and third parties, they both have fine print. Some of the third-party's fine print is downright scary. READ THE FINE PRINT! Mopar Maximum Care is the best and it cuts out the middle man needing to come and give inspected approvals for expensive repairs. It is honored at any dealer location nationwide and will have techs that work on these vehicles every day. The last thing you want is a shade tree mechanic at some garage working on your hybrid tech. You also want Chrysler engineers in the background supporting complex repairs if necessary when the dealer techs can't figure it out.

Tom Winkels at Hayes Jeep Kalamazoo MI or Ziegler is your best option. Tom has beat out Ziegler twice to win my business.

I did not buy my Mopar extended warranty to use it. It is Insurance and I didn't lose anything buying it.

I don't buy car insurance to wreck my car, house insurance to lose my home, or health insurance for sickness, diseases, surgeries, or transplants. I buy them to protect my investments and bank accounts from unforeseen events. I don't want to start over from 0.

Buying the warranty is just buying piece of mind . If your going to keep the vehicle past 5 yrs and drive it then it’s just buying extra insurance . Go on the mopar parts site and price out some mechanical equipment for the Pacifica and then see what just the parts alone cost , then factor in some labour and tell me that a extended warranty is a no brainer purchase . As stated above , it’s a roll of the dice , but save yourself the aggravated post on here when your factory warranty runs out or you have only X amount of miles on it but time has run out .

It is absolutely insurance. It is wise to purchase insurance when the cost of what you are insuring against exceeds your ability to pay, assuming you can afford the insurance. Insurance tends to cost less than the cost of what is insured, because the risk is spread over many people who won't use the insurance at all (or at least far less than their outlay). So, it is a numbers game. If a big repair would put you in the poor house, you should buy insurance and chock up the cost to the price of ownership of that thing (like your house - most of us could not just break out our checkbooks and fork over several hundred $K in the event of a catastrophic loss of your house). You should not buy insurance on a $2 toothbrush, for example, even if the insurance was only $0.05 because you can easily afford to replace the toothbrush and statistically, you will spend more on toothbrush insurance (even at $0.05 a pop) then you will on toothbrushes. Maintenance on your car lies somewhere in-between a toothbrush and your house. I know many people whose budget is so tight that they could not afford an unexpected $1000 repair bill. If your are in that position, insurance (extended warranty) is probably a good bet - and I would wholeheartedly agree with @ThisSuckersElectrical the Mopar Maximum Care is the way to go. Having said that, odds are that @Badge56 is right in that statistically, you will be better off putting your money in the bank. Most of us don't win the lottery, and most of us will spend more on our warranty than we would on repairs over the life of the warranty.

Having said all that, in the spirit of full disclosure, I did purchase the Mopar Maximum Care when I bought my PacHy because my financial status was changing (I was losing my job and I was very unsure about my future job prospects). As it turns out, my Pac has been essentially trouble-free and my extended warranty purchase has gone completely unused. I have never had to have any covered repair done. I did drive over a curb and damaged a rear spindle to the tune of about $1500, but that was on my dime. It may be that I may have to get my radio replaced and if so, it will cost me my $200 deductible, and that will start to offset a little bit of my expense, but odds are that I will never recoup my warranty investment.

You're going to have to do some legwork here on research, but generally speaking, the offers look similar in general scope to the description below - however read all the details. I'm not a seller or agent, so take my summaries with a grain of salt...

Mopar's Programs
  • Maximum Care - Extends the "bumper to bumper" warranty and covers the most things. Wear and tear items are excluded. Note that auto appearance items are also excluded and fall into "Auto Appearance" below.
  • Added Care Plus - Limited warranty scope - but might cover major mechanical stuff. Cheaper than the above. However, do things like electrical switches and mechanical doors matter to you? (Read the fine print for details)
  • Guaranteed Automotive Protection (GAP) - GAP insurance. Most insurance offers to cover the GAP between the value of your car and what you owe on it, should it be totaled. This is only needed up to a certain point (obviously)
  • Road Hazard Tire and Wheel - Simple Tire and Wheel insurance (nails, potholes, etc). You may be covered elsewhere by this.
  • Auto Appearance - Covers scratches, dings dents, paint defects (which I believe are only covered by the base warranty to a point, but not Maximum Care).
  • Scheduled Maintenance - Probably a maintenance package (IE, get 6 oil changes).
Your dealer looks like they just renamed or repackaged them. Take an hour or two and just read the documents:

Also note: If you have a Hybrid, the Hybrid system is covered under its own warranty as well. The length and terms are determined by your state.

I got a Mopar Maximum Care warranty - just for the piece of mind.

One "advantage" of getting the warranty at the purchase dealer is that it's possible (I think?) to roll it into the Chrysler auto loan instead of paying out of pocket. That may (or may not) have financial advantages.

OP:

We've made good use of the plans on most of our vehicles. Certainly on a Pacifica we purchased one immediately. We cashed in the Toyota and one of the Hyundai's without ever using it, saved a bundle on a Ford and OK money on a Kia. In the big picture I think we're perhaps only even, but what price peace of mind?

I found Endurance to be insanely expensive and CarShield to be so ethically challenged it's hard to convey. Check a few review sites and you'll see. Skip "TrustPilot", they seem to refuse to allow a negative review (I've posted two) on any paying business customer. Which tells you a lot about TrustPilot too.

For most folks I suggest Mopar Max, and I would buy it from Ziegler. If you read a few threads you'll find a discount code that pull $300 or so off their quote too.

Tom Winkels at Hayes Jeep Kalamazoo MI or Ziegler is your best option. Tom has beat out Ziegler twice to win my business.

Call Tom and he will walk you through all the plans, millage, and deductibles if you buy from him or not.

As for car shield being "ethically challenged", can you try to convey a little of what you mean? I was on the phone a bit with them and got what appeared to be a great rate. Very wary of doing the wrong thing here but also love saving money.

If you're buying -any- extended warranty for an FCA product, you buy mopar maxcare. That's it. If you're buying anything else you're risking nonsense and delays. Maxcare is all internal at the dealership and you don't have to worry about anything. I once had a rear go on a ram 1500 and his extended warranty took over a month to come out and inspect it. They declined the repair because the rear had rust on it. Of course it had rust on it! It was sitting on the floor for over a month!!!

There's a few aftermarket companies that aren't horrendous such as fedality and zurich, but that's it. It costs nearly the same as the factory backed option and the headaches are 10x less for both you and the dealership.

To everyone saying put the money in the bank you're insane. If you're planning on keeping it outside of basic warranty you will praise the sky when that $1500 radio replacement isn't out of pocket. Labor is stupidly expensive now. Even simple repairs for common failure points will cost you 500-900 a pop at the dealer. If you're the kind of guy who gets a new car every 3 years, then no it's obviously pointless.

An economist would disagree. But then again, economists look at aggregrate numbers, not individual cases. Far more people will spend more on the extended warranty than they save in repairs. It has to be that way or they couldn't afford to sell the warranty (which is really just insurance with a different name). That is how that business works. Anecdotally, the warranties are great, because buyers remember when they save them money, but they forget when they don't. I would never advise someone not to buy one, because of the way human memories work, and I would never be thanked for saving the person the cost of the warranty, but I would be condemned in the event that the person had a high cost repair. If you are in the business of offering advice, it is the safe thing to do, but if you are a fiduciary, you would advise against them.

Any economist who had ever owned a Chrysler minivan would certainly advise getting the Mopar extended warranty if you planned to keep the car for a long time.

As I recall, we bought the 7 year / 130k mile version for our 2016 Town and Country, and it certainly paid for itself the day our transmission failed at 80k miles. It also covered many other smaller issues.

I got a similar plan for our 2021 Limited AWD, which we will certainly keep past 100k miles.

With the increased complexity of all cars, not only the mechanical systems but all the electronics, I am 100% confident that we will more than get our money back.

As an example of the crazy costs these days for all cars, a single-mom friend had the lcd fail on her Toyota 4Runner radio/nav just out of warranty, and the replacement radio was quoted at $5600. I found the lcd screen component for $130, and with the help of a couple youtube videos was able to fix it for her. But most folks would not have that option.

Of course, it’s important to get the best price possible- I got a price from online dealers that discount the warranties, then when buying our car when the guy pressed me on buying a warranty I said I’d be happy to if he matched the discounted price (I had brought a printout documenting the online price), and he did.

It's great that it has worked out for you, but if Chrysler was selling extended warranties for $2000 and then spending $3000 to honor them, they would scrap that part of their business because it would cost them too much money. The only way that any company will sell extended warranties is, if on average, the buyer of the warranty (which is really just insurance) spends more for the warranty than the cost of those repairs. I am sure that Chrysler has accountants that keep track of that stuff and they will price the warranties to insure that they make money, which means that the average buyer will lose money, although some will certainly save a significant amount. It is a business like any other; you can't sell for less than cost or you will not be in business for very long.

This is true of ALL insurance. Not just extended warranties.

If auto insurance costs around $1000/yr and someone goes a whole year without an accident, did the just lose $1000?

Absolutely true of ALL insurance. Insure yourself for things you cannot afford. Because even though the odds are against that thing happening, it would bankrupt you if it did. Do not insure yourself for the things you can afford, because the odds are that you will spend more on insurance than the insurance will spend on you.

The primary reason to carry auto insurance is to protect yourself from liability that you probably could not afford. You didn't lose that $1000, you insured yourself against a potential 6-figure claim that you probably couldn't afford. If you are sitting on a couple of million dollars in the bank, don't buy insurance. The odds are that you will have more money in the bank at the end of the year by not buying insurance than you will by buying it.

To all those that are saying Mopar wouldn’t sell them if it was in the customers favor I think it misses a few points.

1) they did actually stop selling them. When I got my 2018 I got the Mopar max lifetime warranty which I believe they have decide to stop selling. I take this to mean they discovered that for that warranty they were losing money and the break even point, on the average, is somewhere between their current longest plan and lifetime.

2) The “on the average” likely is across the entire line of Mopar vehicles. When I was shopping around I was of the opinion that the Pacifica in particular was more likely to require maintenance than other Mopar vehicles due to various factors (new model, advanced electronics, extra moving parts in a van, etc). Not sure if this is true or not but seemed that way to me.

3) prices for the warranties have been moving up a good bit over the years which makes me believe that they may have been losing money at the previous price points.

4) it’s a bit of a hedge against both inflation and rising parts costs due to reduced supply. A few years from now both labor and parts may be a good bit more expensive. It isn’t issue if you’re covered by a Mopar extended warranty, but could be a much bigger hit if you kept that same money in the bank to save for any repair costs.

Anyway, I thought the mopar max warranty was a steal! I also got a ton of millage out of the tire warranty (actually had 4 full tires replaced) but that’s more luck. The appearance warranty is pretty worthless in my mind.
