Hello all.
Honestly I'd prefer to buy a Rivian R1S, but my wife cannot commit without seeing it and the delivery date looks like it will push into 2022. Nonetheless, we own a 2014 Prius v that is starting to show age after almost 200k miles. My largest concern that I'd like your opinions on is gas mileage. My wife is plainly a poor driver and doesn't adjust her driving behaviors to see better gas mileage. With no dedicated EV Mode, what type of actual average gas mileage should we expect driving about 50 miles per day, on mostly city streets and a small stint of highway, on 1 charge per day?

One charge gets you up to about 30 miles electric unless you dive very carefully. In my experience I get about 30ish mpg in hybrid mode. The display shows you a mix of MPGe and MPG.

Are you asking for the mix of MPGe and MPG or a pure gas MPG?

Here are some back of the envelope calculations. You should get 30 miles out of a charge, maybe a bit less in the winter if you live in the north. The remaining 20 miles of your daily drive will consume gas at about the rate of 30 mpg. Ignoring the cost of electricity (which you should not do) then you should average 30 / 20 * 50 = 75 mpg. To include the cost of electricity, that daily charge will take about 14 kwh of electricity. Only you can tell how much that will cost -- electricity costs vary widely in different areas. Mine costs 7 cents per kilowatt hour in Phoenix using off-peak rates, but I have seen reports of costs over 20 cents per kilowatt hour.

We have both a Pacifica Hybrid and a Prius Prime. If you don't need the people or cargo carrying capacity of the Pacifica then a Prius Prime would be a lot cheaper. It is advertised as having an EV range of 25 miles, but ours does a lot better than that, more like 35 miles. And once the charge runs out it is a whole lot more efficient than the Pacifica.

That said, the Pacifica Pinnacle would be more luxurious and the infotainment system is head and shoulders better than the Prius Prime.

Just driving without charging I’m getting around 35 mpg . Comparing a pacifica to a Toyota Prius is like comparing a corvette to a Bugatti. Here in Ontario electricity charging at stores , theatres , parking , Costco , etc is free from ChargePoint and flo . So I can get almost 900 kms on a change and a tank of gas for 55 bucks . For the size and seating and room you can’t beat it .

If you really don’t need the space and extra seating (I see that you are considering a Rivian), why don’t you consider a Tesla Model Y, which is available in a couple months if you book now. It’ll be cheaper than a Rivian to buy, cheaper than a Pacifica or prime to operate and you get supercharging at really low rates in case you need to go on a trip (compared to Rivian). May be your wife can get over it’s looks too. .

Honestly wife my wife's driving I suspect it would be the mixed mileage? When you drive it hard, will it kick in the gas motor too, or run ov EV until the batteries are drained?

If you floor the pedal it will turn on the gas engine to give you extra power. Once you let off the pedal the gas engine will shut down a minute or two later, after it has had a chance to warm up. I can consistently accelerate off a stoplight faster than other big cars without triggering the gas engine. For me the only times the gas engine comes on is when I am passing another car on a two lane country road and sometimes on a freeway entrance if the ramp is up hill.

Hello @PhillyMonte! Another belated welcome. I have seen the Rivian R1S and R1T up close and in person. They are stunningly designed vehicles, and I would also love to have the R1S. I happen to live less that 40 miles from the Rivian factory in Normal, Illinois. Last fall I attended an open house they held where they showed off some of the prototypes they had built. RJ Scaringe himself was there and gave an interesting speech and introduction to his babies. In addition to the built up vehicles, they had the "skateboard" platform chassis on display. It was pretty easy to imagine a minivan being built upon it, but I doubt that will happen soon.

That aside, here's the reason for my post. Based on your opening post, I'm guessing to really want the Rivian when it becomes available. Your ownership of a Prius indicates you care about going electric and saving on gas usage. If I were in the same situation (you don't indicate you need the extra room of a minivan), I'd seriously consider getting a used low mileage Prius (or other hybrid Toyota) to tide you over until Rivian has some freshly printed order forms. Best of luck with your decision process.

The $7,500 tax credit is too strong to walk away from, in comparison to the Toyota products. I would essentially buy a minivan and get the Hybrid for free.

For your particular case (50miles/day and one full charge) and aggressive driving you'll probably get about 40ish MPG-equivalent which is displayed in the car. In reality you'll use less than one gallon/day.

I am 6'3", 240 lbs, way over retirement age. When I eyeballed the 3rd row, I made a mental note, "not for me"! However a more compact agile adult would probably fit fine. It is definitely NOT a kids only seat. I have no way of comparing it to a Pilot.

We do need the space, which is why Tesla is not a consideration.

What type of mileage do you average under hard driving, MPGe? Does it have an instant MPG display on the dash?

Also, the Rivian video traversing S. America and N. America was a very good piece on capability and durability.
