Oil Analysis To Help Understand Head Gasket/Engine Failure Issue

3036 Views 74 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  jongri
Decided to send in an oil sample on a 2019 Pacifica with 27,595 miles. This may show early signs of whatever is causing these head gasket/engine failures. Have no idea what the results will show but I'll document it here when the lab provides results in a week.

This might be the research we all need at some point, thanks for the public service.

I think before people think that this analysis will answer your questions pertaining to the .001% failure you might want to read up on the pros and cons .

Good article. Data driven.

What information are you expecting to get out of the analysis to conclude whether head gasket failure is predicted or not?

Just want to find out the general health of the vehicle. Could manifest in several different ways some of which will be more evident than others. First step is to at least get some data. Also, Blackstone tracks universals for each vehicle so it'll be good to get a baseline for this vehicle against their existing data set. It might be a rabbit hole that requires several more samples over multiple oil changes or could show something more serious like coolant present. Would like to rule out any obvious signs of failure if possible.

Fantastic idea. Too bad it doesn't request model year as well with Build date/Purchase Date, etc.. But at least it asks for the most important information Engine info/Type of Oil/Mileage of Oil/Odometer mileage for the analysis (y) .
Here is two of my oil analysis.

And here is one of my transmission fluid samples

I'd imagine the only thing you might see is higher antifreeze% in oil. But that would imply failure has already occurred.

Is this a Pacifica or another vehicle?

They do. It's on the other side of the sheet. Don't request build date however.

Awesome, especially considering you're a Pacifica Hybrid owner from what I gather with your Pachy 200,000 Mile Club info . What year & trim is the Pacifica your having oil analysis done on if you don't mind?
Does Mobil 1 meet MS specs these days? It used to, many years ago.

So the PacHy is closing in on quarter of a million soon. That ship has long since sailed. Most of these failures have occurred between 50-80k and don't recall seeing any on a PacHy so have intentionally not taken an oil sample from my vehicle for this experiment.

The vehicle in question is owned by relatives who have a 2019 Pacifica Limited gas only model which is still under warranty and fits the profile of a vehicle which could experience the head gasket issue. It has been serviced exclusively by the dealer for its life and if anything is wrong it is perfect for identifying the source of the issue given this history.

So if my report comes back and says the Pacifica engine is a POS, it's going to be hard to argue with the data? 😆

It's very hard to argue with that in my situation.

It probably does, but they don't pay the fee to license said specification so they can't print it on the bottle. It doesn't matter anyways as it pertains to keeping your warranty valid. As long as you're using an API certified 0W20 oil you're meeting that requirement.
