I'm going out to shop for Pacifica's today and am curious what to expect if I need to order versus buying off the lot. Is there less room for negotiation when ordering? Could I request invoice price plus destination minus holdback on an order? Are there any tips or advice that I should be aware of? I've never bought a new car so I'm not sure what to expect on an ordered vehicle.

Thanks,

Konner

depends on your area and if it is a volume dealer or not. Most will be reluctant to go through all that work for an ordered unit . off the lot is more likely.

just remember at end of day, its used cars where people usually get ripped. Or by buying based off payment. people get obsessed with under their payment.

for example... when all youre worried about payment, finance guy can structure deals that get under your payment but maintain $4000 profit in long run.

youre off to the right start. base sale on final price. do not say trade in until after this price. but keep in mind, this forces the numbers to be real for your trade, versus inflated magic numbers. Most dealers will tack the discount off msrp onto trade, to make you think youre getting more for trade, when in reality... its just a discount and getting real wholesale type numbers for trade.

When I purchased my Pacifica, I considered ordering one as I really didn't want Navigation. In the end, though, I picked one that had everything else I wanted (plus Nav). My salesperson (who I had purchased other vehicles from as well, so I trusted him) said that he couldn't guarantee what incentives would be available when the car came in. At that specific dealer, he said they are more likely to be flexible on price for an in-stock unit.

I agree with Frozen Tundra, absolutely focus on the price of the car, NOT the monthly payment. The larger the dealer, the more likely they will give you all of the hold back, mine did.

Invoice (and MSRP) already include destination. You can get almost any price you want if you are willing to work hard enough for it. Getting "dealer cost" (invoice - holdback + tax/tags/registration) requires finding a dealer who is extra motivated to move a single unit, which will require you to continually follow up with multiple dealerships near the end of each month. Most people find it worth their time to just to let the dealer "win" and offer "dealer cost" plus whatever they think their time is worth.

Also remember to be clear that you want an "out-the-door" price including all taxes and dealer fees. Getting this number is like pulling teeth. Don't try to negotiate each item, just negotiate the final purchase price. Don't get hung up on if you are paying a bogus $699 "processing fee", as long as it is offset by a reduction in the vehicle price.

Have your financing lined up before you start negotiating. The real negotiating starts when you get in the F&I guys office. Just remember these words: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."

Nitrogen tire fill: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Etching: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Extended Warranty: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Paint Protection: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Hood Film: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Window Tint: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."
Anything else they offer to you: "Thanks, but I'm not interested in that."

Anything the F&I guy tries to sell you can usually be purchased for less from someone else after you get the vehicle.

Good luck!

Don't forget dealer trades. Your preferred dealer may not have the exact options that you want. They can run a scan of available vehicles and find the one that has your desired options. They usually won't charge you any extra.
The Chrysler online locator that is available to consumers is not as accurate or quick as the one that dealers have. They can see what's out there and what's on order.

My dealer actually got pretty close to the prices I've seen on this forum for the lifetime extended warranty. So, I just went ahead and bought it.
