Place Hands on Steering Wheel Warning?

I did, but was doing it on purpose to see how the lane assist works. Haven't read the manual, but I'm wondering if the silver ring on the steering wheel detects if your hand is on the wheel (kinda like those heart monitors on exercise machines) OR if it works by detecting inputs from the steering wheel.
