We were excited to finalize our lease of a 2018 Pacifica Limited last Monday (1/29/2018).
I was actually looking forward to our weekly weekend Costco trip so I can finally take advantage of all the space!
Unfortunately, the rear Power Liftgate stopped working today, 2/3/2018, less than a week and 107 miles of use.
The problem:
- liftgate was opened, and then closed as requested
- Dashboard shows liftgate NOT closed; interior lights remain on confirming one of the doors not closed
- opened liftgate again, and close with Fob. Upon closing, did not hear lock mechanism engaged
- can visually see / feel that door did not close flush on the right side of the gate
- Continue attempt to open / close with no avail. Eventually dashboard says: Power Liftgate Temporarily Unavailable. Close Manually to Operate"
- At this time, I was not able to open the liftgate manually. It remain "locked" even with the press of the exterior button on the gate handle. Concurrently, system shows gate is NOT closed. So the gate is literally stuck at closed position, unable to open, with the computer thinking it's actually open.

Quite frustrating for a brand new vehicle; ruined my Costco trip. Scheduled service first thing Monday 2/5/2018. Will report back.

Sorry to hear this, especially for us Costco lovers! I'd be a bit bothered too; I got my 2018 Pac 1/30/18 and have exactly 100 miles on it now after 4 days of ownership. Yes report back.

I can't find the thread now, but I think there is a place on the inside of the lift gate with a plastic cover where the mechanism can be accessed. You may need some sort of plastic pry tool to take the piece off. Just thought I'd mention it in case you are able to reset it yourself and avoid a dealer appointment.

Hi jtinternet,
This is not what we hope to hear from our Pacifica owners. We understand the excitement of purchasing a new vehicle, and would hate for this experience to change your mind about it. We would like to offer our assistance while you are working with your dealer. Please feel free to send us a private message with your VIN, phone number, current mileage and servicing dealer.

Another owner getting the power liftgate error message

Today I also got the "Power Liftgate Temporarily Unavailable. Close Manually to Operate" error message on my 2018 Pacifica. I had the liftgate open for approximately an hour with the ignition off, and then when I went to close it would not respond to any of the close buttons and the error message would display on the dash. I manually closed the liftgate, and then was immediately able to power open and close it after that. Hopefully there won't be any other trouble, but we'll see.

I should also mention that on two occasions last week I attempted to open the liftgate with the key fob, but the first double-press of the button produced only beeping and clicking but no motion. A second double-press a few seconds later made the liftgate open normally.

Probably like other electronics where if they fail, it's typically early. That's the silver lining

The first thing you mentioned is described in the owner's manual so I think that any time you leave it opened for an extended period, you may get that message.

I'm not sure about the beeping and clicking but no motion. Hopefully it will resolve itself after using the fob with the liftgate more if it is a new van.

I recently came across this problem as well. I did a car wash yesterday and since then the tail gate would not close. Encountered the problem Sunday evening about 7ish and was 45KM away from home. Somehow managed to get to home and dropped the car to the dealer this morning. Waiting to see what they say.

Getting to see problems with sliding door power(both doors) as well.

Brand new Sport edition 2018. Our back hatch would attempt to open from the key FOB. But wouldn't lift. The button inside the door wouldn't register anything. Had to manually lift the door open and shut. Really disappointed as we only have 1700 miles or so on the vehicle. Dealership said it was the liftgate that had to be replaced already. I'm hoping this is just a freak occurrence and doesn't repeat itself with the same issue.....

If anyone knows how to disable the lift gate without getting error messages, I'd love to know about it.
I spend a lot of time driving around with sea kayakz, rowing shells, or windsurfers on my (custom) roof racks, and the liftgate wants to bang them up.
Every time I open it I have to fight to stop it, whereupon it tries to close. After preventing THAT, it behaves like a manual liftgate until next time.
Not a big deal but it does get annoying.

I bought a new 2018 with about 10 miles on it, and the lift gate open on the dash lit up as I drove it off the lot. The dealer had to order and replace a part in the lift gate. Also, the plastic finger cups kept falling out of the rear lift gate. The dealer would replace then and they would keep falling out. I finally got tired of going to the dealer, so I glued them into the lift gate. You will find that the build quality is not as good as other vans (Japan built).
