Pumping or Gear turning noise while off/parked and plugged in.

We have been noticing that the Hybrid has a low pumping noise that seems to come from the center of the dash board when the van is parked and charging. When I turn on the van the noise stops. It seems like this noise only starting happening recently Dec. Jan. and I am wondering if it is related to warming the battery or some other maintenance system keeping the oil circulating. I took a video that has the noise but do not know if we can upload a video here. There are no warning lights and the van seems fine otherwise.

Anyone else notice a similar noise from near the dash?

I have yet to try and document if the noise also occurs while not plugged in yet.

Edit.

I had U73 done in Dec. and never noticed the noise before that.

Just wondering, what level charger are you using? I’m guessing you have a level 2. I haven’t noticed this noise on mine but I do notice that when using a level 2 charger, the battery cooling system is much more active (fans run). Just wondering if a level 1 causes the same noise.

Yes using level 2 charger. Interesting point, as I did get a faster 6kw charger for home. However, I charge at work as well and it's also a 5.7kw and have been doing so since I got the van. So don't believe they are related.
Oh and one other note is I hear it even when. I'm not plugged in, and just after turning off the power. As OP said, only happens while power is off, and as soon as van is powered up, it stops

Update:

I have been trouble shooting this for 4 months now. Here are my observations:

1) Happens when charging and also sometimes when just turning off the car and not charging.
2) I have used level 1 EVSE and 3 different level 2 EVSE chargers ranging from 16-32 amps and the sound happens on all of them.
3) I have started to hear the noise rarely while driving but it is intermittent and seems to be loosley related to the Air Conditioner because I can change the noise speed by turning on/off the AC while it is happening.
4) Just starting in April 2019 I get a MIL light that will stay lit for hours then then turn off and this has repeated itself for 2 weeks now.
5) I checked the code using OBDII scanner and discovered a Battery Heating System Error. I will post actual code (UPDATE: U1124 OBD2 code) next time it appears but I googled the code and others have said it is not critical and they continued to drive until they could get it looked at.

These symptoms make me think it is indeed a problem with the EV battery cooling pump like mentioned above. I am going to have the dealership look at it in May. I will post updates as I get them.

For a while I was hearing it almost on a daily basis but it seems to be happening less now, or may I just don't notice it anymore. I mentioned it to my service rep(being serviced for the V15 recall), but I have doubts that they will be able to root cause it.

Update

We have not had time to take the van to the dealership yet. Since we received the ball-joint recall we are going to try and get both done at the same time in July. I did want to update the post because we have some new observations.

1) Ever since the weather in South Texas got warmer we do not have the MIL light come on for U1124 code.
2) The noise still happens but is more noticeable while driving or idling. It still happens when parked/charging sometimes.
3) m0ebius604 states his noise seems to come from passenger footwell. My noise seems to come from the center of console near charging light. I will have to listen closer from passenger footwell to verify location.
4) I have been testing by parking the car but leaving it running with the AC on. I can hear the noise start and stop after a period of time so this does seem to be related to heating/cooling.

I am wondering if there is some sort of heat exchanger that is used between the battery system and climate control. This would explain why the noise happens while the car is off/charging as well as on.

If anyone does get this resolved with a dealership please post your experience. My dealership has very little experience working with hybrid systems.

The Noise in the dash sounds the same as mine.

But mine only happens for me when the vehicle is woken, or turned off.. Never happens when On or running.

When your charging the vehicle is awake.

I’ve attached some pics to help you see if its a match for you. I touched the actuator and it is the source.

But to have that noise when the vehicle is On or driving - in combination of the fault suggests you have two problems or somehow the systems are related?

Yes have a look.

Today sitting in traffic planning my day with the volume at 6 on the radio, it was silent and then the servo glitch started occurring with the system on. This time it sounded from the Drivers footwell area.

This is the fist time its occurred with the vehicle in Run. The mode was in Auto and the AC was active.

I pressed the off button and the noise stopped, then pressed Auto again and it remained off.

Suspicious of the control module - I’m going to scan my vehicle with wiTech and see if I can update the climate control or reload the software at the min and see how things change.

As posted in the other thread, heres a graphical view of the noise seen in wiTech 2.0.

Unfortunately theres no flashes available and I wasn't able to reset the control unit from tester.

I’m going to powerdown the 12v to reset the control module and see if this has an effect

Ignition OFF

Ignition ACC to RUN

I have confirmed my noise is coming from same location m0ebius604 posted in the pictures above (passenger side footwell area). When sitting in the driver's seat the center speaker grille seems to transmit the noise but if you move your head over to the passenger side, it is very noticeable. I tried to feel for a vibration that matched the noise and I found it was coming from the area m0ebius604 circled in red. I have still not taken the van in for recall/service so I am hoping someone finds a solution here first. I do not have confidence in FCA techs resolving this if there is no CEL/trouble at the time of service.

I have a similar clicking noise (like grinding?) when the car is in idle with climate off. The noise is gone when in driving mode or turned off. I am typing this post while waiting for the technician to diagnose. The tech wants to compare my van with other hybrid to see if it is normal. Will update later.

Problem Solved Recirculation Actuator

Took our 2108 Pacifica Hybrid into the shop for second time to resolve issue with pumping or ink jet printer noise coming from underneath passenger side dash. First time results were we were told they all do it. We beg to differ but took it home. Two months later we see the post on this forum regarding at the same problem. This time took it in and told them where to look and what might be the problem. Athens Landmark Dodge solved the problem this time!
Here is actual verbiage from repair no charge invoice (under warranty 32000 miles): Customer states their EIS a gear/grinding noise coming from the right side of the dash; servo jitter? Recirculation door.

Duplicated noise, located noise, behind dash, removed under panel and glove box, found recirculation door flutters at half way point. When vehicle shuts off this door should move to the half way of open or closed. It couldn't find the half way point and just sat there and ratcheted back and forth. After performing electrical test to see if the actuator was bad or the control module was the cause, determined the actuator causing the issue. Replaced recirculation actuator to correct. Noise no longer present.

So i hope this helps other folks out there with this problem to get it solved before you vehicle goes out of warranty. So it was the recirculation actuator as described earlier in this string but this is the first post that I am aware of where the problem has been solved. My apologies if already posted elsewhere.

Mine started this today. Mine has nothing to do with charging. Parked in Sam's Club parking lot. Went in, got what I needed, and came back out. As soon as I opened the driver-side door and closed it, it started making this noise non-stop until I started the car then it stopped. 2100 miles in service start date 07/08/2019

Thanks for posting the info. I have copied and printed this to take to my dealer.

Thanks for posting resolution. I was going to add that when the noise happens, the air speed coming from the vents pulses in sync with noise. The recirc solution does seem to confirm/ explain all my symptoms. Now I just hope my dealer can fix it.

I just repaired my Recirculated Air door actuator. Turns out the part is around $25 and takes less than 30min to install.

Pn 68164960AA

Empty the content and drop the Glove Box out by releasing the damper snap on the right side, pressing the side tabs inward to release and fold it downward. Release the trim covering the Recirculated air filter with a slight push on the center of the clips (1/8” upward) and release the trim by pulling out the clips. Release the 2 Phillips screws on the lower vent and pop it out. There are two 7/32” screws holding the actuator in place and 1 alignment stud. Release the screws, pop the old actuator out (Be careful not to mix them up by marking it immediately!)

The new one might not go in because the aligment is out, just plug it in, press recirc on the HVAC panel and install it into the holder. Turn off the ignition and re-install everything in reverse. (Retrim)

No coding needed.

BROADLY, I agree with m0ebius604, who does a great job laying out the steps to access the part. What I strongly disagree with, was the 30 minutes it took. I would really like some tips and pointers if anyone has any, for how you get the actuator screws out, and then back in. I was doing this on a 2019 gas Pacifica, and this is such a tightly constrained location I would NEVER do it again myself. I don't know what tool would make it better, I had a thumbwheel ratchet, extensions, universal joints, etc and WAS able to eventually get the screws out and one back in (the other is lost forever in the dash somewhere), but I never found the ah-hah moment of realizing what tool/angle/etc was right for the application. I'll be attempting the second screw when I get a replacement...which I might grab a dozen because I have no idea how to start that other screw.

We've had the problem for over six months now, very replicable. The "flapping" or "circulating" sound stars immediately when the car is turned off, charging or not. I brought it up during the last recall, and the dealer service rep said that these "hybrids always have something running and it's normal".

When I looked at the repair slip, it mentioned that the tech scanned for codes and there was none, so all good.

I asked what was making the noise if it was normal and he couldn't answer. I was busy so I left, but I'll say what was fast and regular only gets slower and clunkier over time.
Thanks for the diagnosis, now I have something to go back with.

Just curious if anyone has a copy of their work order that fixed this issue. I am taking my van in to get repaired this month and hoped to show them a Chrysler work order to make it easier for them. Otherwise I will just print out a copy of this thread and hope they are willing to read it.

Having the exact same issue with my van. Thanks everyone for all the effort and determining the problem. Quick question... Would leaving it this way cause any additional issues? The HVAC seems to be operating normally although I am unable to put the AC fully into recirculate mode (I can smell the exhaust from other vehicles even when in recirc mode). But this is the byproduct of the defective servo. Other than being unable to put the HVAC into recirc mode, are there any other problems that could come from leaving it alone? I really don't have the time to bring the van in for service and would prefer to wait until something else breaks before the warranty is up. But don't want to if leaving it as is could create more problems. Thanks again for the help!

Thank you everyone! This thread has been very useful for me.

My 2018 PacHy also started to produce this noise 6 months ago.
Only seemed to happen the moment I turn off the the engine.

After studying this thread I took my vehicle in for service.
I told the service coordinator about the sound and that I think it might be the recirculation door in the passenger footwell.
Although a pretty nice guy, as expected he said "well you see, these hybrids always have some motors and pumps to keep cooling the battery even after the car turns off, probably nothing to worry about".
(I knew to expect that response thanks to this thread.)

I insisted that the sound has been getting louder over the 6 months.

The service coordinator brought in the lead mechanic/foreman to come and listen to the sound. He said he thinks the blower fan is continuing to run, which it should not, so he agreed to take the glovebox off and look into it further.

They called me to tell me that it is in fact the recirculator door actuator, but the new part will need to be shipped in, so another 2 days. Finally, all fixed.

Again, thanks everyone.

I have noticed the same noise in my 2018 limited Pacifica after opening the door before startup and after engine shut down, looking for answers?

I took my 2018 in yesterday and the service rep said that it was normal. The car did not make the sound when we first bought it and the noise has been increasing over the last several months. I don't want to miss my chance when I'm still in the warranty period. Any ideas? Not sure if the dealer really knows what the problem is.
