Let's see if I can describe this in a way that makes sense...

I was backing up slowly and there were no warning sounds despite them being turned on. There was a large storage bin behind my Pacifica. It was off to the left and not directly behind me. I did not see it when the rear brake suddenly engaged as my rear left tire/wheel and rear quarter panel scraped up against it. How would it not detect that until it hit it? It did not dent anything, but did scrape a bit and I could not quite buff it all out.

The same reason someones "auto drive" Tesla didn't apply the brakes and crashed into the back of a truck and killed the driver that was watching a Harry Potter movie instead of ahhh driving. The technology isn't perfect and its nice to have, but its still up to you to avoid an accident. Many variables exist that can fool the sensors. Bottom line? You still need to watch where you are going even with the nanny's on.
