We are trying to find out how much people have actually paid to have their rustproofing done at the dealers.
I am sure the prices are all over the place. The thing is that often the "rust proofing" is not applied very well in the areas that are most rust prone. They just tell some kid to quit sweeping the floor, drop that broom and rust proof that car over there and when your done, empty the garbage, then wash those 3 cars that just came in. I have had cars "rust proofed" ,and I use that term loosely, in the past by Rusty Jones, Zebart, and a dealer, None seemed to help much. Remember the areas that need protection most are areas that you cannot see so determining if those areas were coated and protected by the alleged rust proofing are a mater of faith.

I was quoted $1800 which quickly dropped to $1400 for the dealer's magic potion that covered paint protection, interior fabric protection and rust proofing. I declined. In my opinion, all are just gimmicks to add more profit for the dealer. They are not necessary. The corrosion protection of cars has improved immensely since the 1980s when cars rusted out prematurely. I think the factory corrosion protection these days is more than adequate. Given the numerous sound deadening and aerodynamic improving panels on the underside of the Pacifica, I seriously question if the rust proof material can get everywhere it should. You also need to ensure the application does not end up plugging drain holes that are there specifically to let moisture get out.

How many 7 to 10 year old cars do you see with rust issues. And even the ones that do show rust, if the source is the exterior surface (resulting from stone chip, etc.), the rust proofing warranty likely won't cover it as the rust must start on the inside of the body panel.

I've been told by many who work at dealers that rust proofing is a scam. If anything it traps moisture rather than letting it evaporate. There is no real "seal". With Galvanized steel and such it is no longer needed. Put the $1000-2000 in the bank.

Thank you all for the responses. I am leery of using a third party rust proofer in case the dealer claims the rust proofing caused a problem and they will try to wiggle out of covering under warranty. Sounds like the dealer's making a big profit on this. 1400?
